Michael Phelps’ Dopey Decision Continues to Haunt Him

He may have gone public admitting his “bad” judgment, but that’s not stopping police in Columbia, South Carolina from opening an investigation into Michael Phelps’ alleged inhaling from a marijuana pipe. The sheriff in Columbia, where the incident took place last November, announced yesterday that an investigation is now underway, and charges could be pending against the 23-year-old Olympic swimming sensation. “If someone breaks the law in Richland County, we have an obligation as law enforcement to investigate and to bring charges,” deputies said in a written statement. “The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is making an effort to determine if … Continue reading

Who is Michael Moore?

You may have seen some news about documentary filmmaker Michael Moore latest venture, Sicko, which explores the American health care system, including managed-care and pharmaceutical industries. If you don’t know who Michael Moore is, he is the filmmaker that is always out to stir up controversy. However, as conservative as I am, I often find that many of his observations are right on track. Michael grew up in Michigan in a time when most people worked in the auto business in some form. His mom was a secretary for General Motors and both his father and grandfather were GM autoworkers. … Continue reading

Kara Kennedy’s Family Tree

In the news today, it was announced that Kara Kennedy, the daughter of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, has passed away. The cause of death was a heart attack. She was 51 years old. Since she is part of the very well known Kennedy family, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at her family tree. The families of politicians tend to be “in the public eye”, whether they happen to like the attention or not. Few political families have been written about, talked about, or filmed more than the Kennedy family has. So many of the people … Continue reading

West Memphis Three Freed – Part 1

Sometimes I think of a blog to write, but the category it belongs in may be a bit blurry. Many blogs I write could fall both within the Pop Culture and Green Living blog. Such is this blog about the West Memphis Three. In 1993, three teenagers – Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin – were accused of committing a horrible crime just across the river from my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. Three eight-year-old boys – Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers – were found murdered. The three teenagers were convicted in what many later called a “witch … Continue reading

Some Interesting Movies About Insurance

Would you watch a movie that was about insurance, insurance agents, or the insurance industry? Most people would immediately decide that those kinds of movies are better used a sleep aid than as a form of entertainment. There is a new movie called “Cedar Rapids” that might make you think differently. It’s about insurance agents, stars Ed Helms, and is getting good reviews. What makes you decide to see a movie? It could be that you are a fan of the actor or actress starring in a certain movie. Maybe you have a favorite genre, like “Action/Adventure”, “Science Fiction”, or … Continue reading

Single Parenting: Who They Are

Who Are They? According to the U.S. Census Bureau in the summer of 2007, there were approximately 13.6 million single parents in the United States alone. The children that they are raising total 21.2 million. This relates to 26% of children under the age of 21. Most custodial parents are, not surprisingly, mothers. Mothers total approximately 84% with the remaining 16% being custodial dads. Thirty-three per cent of these single moms have never been married and the majority of the moms being either divorced or separated. Only 1% of these moms are widowed. Of the fathers, totaling 16%, 57% were … Continue reading

Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines Sued

The lead singer for the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, is being sued by Terry Hobbs. Now, the name Terry Hobbs might not be familiar to you, but if I were to say the stepfather of Steven Branch, one of the victims of the West Memphis Three murders, you might remember his name. The West Memphis Three was a horrific murder case that happened just across the Mississippi River in 1993 when I lived in Memphis, Tennessee. Three eight year old boys (Steven Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore) were found dead in a Robin Hood Hills drainage canal. I won’t … Continue reading

Morgan Spurlock Spends “30 Days” in a Coal Mine

I have blogged before about my love for the FX Network reality show “30 Days.” This show is done by filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (the guy that did SuperSize Me and it puts one person in another person’s shoes for 30 days. Sometimes it is a random person and sometimes it is Morgan living the other life for 30 days. Last night was the season premiere and Morgan decided to work 30 days as a coal miner. After all, Morgan is from West Virginia – a state known for its coal mining. And, I have to admit, before I watched the … Continue reading

Lindsay Lohan: Is She or Isn’t She?

In case you haven’t noticed lately, Lindsay Lohan has been hanging out with popular Los Angeles DJ Samantha Ronson. The two have been almost inseparable for the past year or so. However, for months now, there has been speculation that Lohan and Ronson are more than friends. The two showed for the party on Diddy’s yacht at Cannes last week. They were affectionate all night, holding hands. Some say, like Lindsay’s mom, says they are just close friends. In fact, Dina, in a PEOPLE interview, called Samantha a sweetheart and said, “She’s great – and she’s the best spinner around.” … Continue reading

Favorite Movie Villains: Who Didn’t Make the Cut

As you probably know if you have been reading my villain blog series, Entertainment Weekly released their 50 favorite movie villains list. This list was comprised by the EW staff. But, it seems they left off quite a few fan favorites! Fans couldn’t believe EW missed Glenn Close as Marquise Merteuil in Dangerous Liaisons. Personally, I am offended that both EW and fans missed the ultimate female villain, beautiful yet demented Alex Forrest, played by Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. I am sure plenty of us could relate when she told Michael Douglas “I’m not going to be ignored, Dan!” … Continue reading
