Parents and Oscar Night

You know you are a parent when you’ve only seen one of the Academy Awards’ 10 best-picture nominees… Let’s hear it for Toy Story 3! What does it say about me that I’ve seen Toy Story 3 four times in the movie theater and about 1000 times at home after my 6-year-old was gifted with the DVD version at Christmas? There was a time when I would plan my entire day around the Oscars. I’d clear my calendar, invite friends over, order in pizza or Chinese, and then refuse to answer the phone while I drooled over my favorite Hollywood … Continue reading

Be Kind to Animals Week

This week is the Humane Society’s Be Kind to Animals Week, so for the next few articles I’m going to share details and tips on responsible pet ownership. Or in today’s case, acknowledge some great animal rights workers. When I first started writing the pet blog, my husband joked that I could create a monthly column entitled “Reasons Why Angela Isn’t Allowed to Watch Animal Planet.” He said that because, on occasion, I get worked up watching the channel. In particular, the show I should really never let myself watch is Animal Cops. There’s a smattering of these series now, … Continue reading

Make Mine Fruit

Fruit and vegetables experts agree, are good for you. They can cut the risk of some cancers, help in regards to heart disease and provide all sorts of benefits yet, they are sadly underrated by many people, which I find hard to understand. Fruit and vegetables are among my favorite foods. When it come to fruit, I’m a big wrap for apples, especially Jonathans because they have that tarter taste. But they don’t keep as well as some other apples, and have limited shelf life, which is why orchards have stopped growing them as much. Cameos and Sundowners, and Granny … Continue reading

What to do with Leftover Super Bowl Snacks

Sunday’s Super Bowl was one for the history books. It’s not every year that viewers are treated to a nail biter that’s actually worth watching, but this year’s match-up between Arizona and Pittsburgh delivered. Ironically, the action of the field kept some from devouring my friend’s Super Bowl spread. Last night she called complaining about major leftovers. My suggestion: Put the snacks to good use in recipes that can be served as part of weeknight meals. You can use up leftover chicken to make a spicy Buffalo Chicken Wing Dip and boring baked potatoes can transformed into Kicked Up Potato … Continue reading

The results have been tabulated and the winner of the most-watched Super Bowl commercial is… The Go Daddy Web site’s “enhancement” ad with Danica Patrick. The results are courtesy of TiVo, Inc., which determined the winner by combining the number of people who watched the ad live with those who went back to see it again on their digital video recorder. According to Go Daddy bigwigs, placing their ad in the game’s final few minutes paid off big time. Execs with the company say they took a big risk by purchasing ad space so late in the game. Had the … Continue reading

No Fuss Pumpkin Pie

If you have (or have had) a picky little eater in your family then you know the sheer delight that overcomes you when he or she finds a new favorite food. Two years ago I worked a miracle and got my picky eater (she’s not very picky anymore) to try a bite of pumpkin pie. Two bites later and my toddler was pumping her fists proclaiming her love for the spicy dessert. It was a Hallelujah moment and I immediately went online to hunt down every pumpkin pie recipe known to man. I spent months experimenting with pumpkin pie recipes, … Continue reading
