Which Cities Are Greenest?

Do you live in a green city? And, just what makes a city green? More and more cities, especially larger ones, are starting to consider their impact on the environment and are trying to make changes. The Green Guide conducted a survey in cities with populations of over 100,000 to see which ones were the greenest. They looked at each cities commitment and scored them based upon that. What type of criteria was considered? Some cities like Eugene, Oregon had a sustainable business incubator and an extensive wetlands program. But what brought Eugene in at #1 might have been the … Continue reading

Which Springfield Will Be THE Springfield?

Have you ever visited Springfield, Oregon? How about Springfield, Missouri or Springfield, Massachusetts? I’ve traveled to Springfield, Missouri and was impressed by its charming small town feel, but wonder if that will be enough to earn it the title of “The Simpsons Springfield.” More than a dozen Springfields from Oregon to Massachusetts are competing to host the movie debut of Homer, Bart, Marge and the rest of the TV Simpson family (who live in their own fictional Springfield) this summer. Officials from 16 Springfields throughout North America have accepted an invitation from 20th Century Fox to compete for the honor … Continue reading

More Genealogy Resources on Twitter

Type the word “genealogy” into the “find people” search engine on Twitter, and you get around six pages of results to search through. Not all of them are actually relevant to genealogy, because there are no requirements that state that your Twitter name must match exactly what kind of information you tweet about. This means that you have to sort out the ones that are helpful from the ones that are not useful for you. Here are some more genealogy resources that you can find on Twitter: @geneateach is the Twitter name for a Genealogy Teacher from Chicago, Illinois. While … Continue reading

Get Your Wiggle on at Six Flags

My preschool daughter has never been a huge Wiggles fan. What’s more, she screams like a banchee every time I try to put her on an amusement park ride. And I’m not talking about those baby roller coasters that travel on a flat track, or those crazy toddler swings that spin around with modified reckless abandon. For the past three years my child has unleashed glass shattering, ear splitting, high-pitched shrieks each time I’ve tried to place her on merry-go-round horses (the paralyzed ones that don’t move up and down), baby boats (that barely move in a pool no bigger … Continue reading

Saying Goodbye to “Guiding Light”

I honestly never thought I would see the day that “Guiding Light” would end, but alas, the long-running CBS soap opera will shine no more. According to reports, the 72-year-old daytime serial has been cancelled. The final episode will air on September 18th. Do you know how many retirees are crying right now? I know one retired woman, who lives and dies by CBS soaps. My friend’s grandmother has been a fan of “Guiding Light” since it debuted on TV in June 1952 (the daytime drama began as a radio soap opera in 1937) and has only missed a handful … Continue reading

Derrie-Air Ready for Take-Off

It’s an airline that would have been thoroughly embraced by Bart Simpson and his dad Homer, but alas it turns out that a new carrier called Derrie-Air, which purportedly charged passengers by the pound, is as fictional as the big-eyed, yellow-skinned characters from animated Springfield. Only not everyone who saw the ads for the fake airline knew they were a joke. D’Oh! Late last week millions of unsuspecting readers of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News opened their newspapers to see ads for a new airline called Derrie-Air, which offered a way to save big on summer travel. According … Continue reading

Neil Young Gets His Own Spider

Hey, don’t step on that spider! It might be a Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi. A what? Yes, it is true – rocker Neil Young has had a spider named after him. Jason Bond, a biologist at East Carolina University, has discovered a new species of the trapdoor spider. When you discover a new species, you get the honor of naming it. Bond’s favorite musician is Neil Young, so voila – the Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi was born. Bond explained that while there are strict rules about how you name your new species, you could use any name you like as long as you follow … Continue reading

Beauty, Inside or Out?

An article in Southern Cross magazine declared that, ‘on any given day, the average Australian woman draws from a collection of $100 to $400 worth of cosmetic products to look after and make up her face.’ I was astounded and horrified when I read this statement. But what about this one? ‘One of the three women interviewed by the Herald Sun for a “face-off” of beauty products and their costs admitted the total contents of her make-up drawer are worth over $5000.’ Don’t get me wrong I’m not suggesting Christian women should not wear make up. I don’t feel dressed … Continue reading

D’Oh! Bart Gets Dumped and Heidi Jumps Ship

It’s bye-bye Bart in Venezuela. After getting the boot from China a TV channel in Venezuela has also pulled the plug on “The Simpsons” because it contains material officials say is inappropriate for children. According to local newspapers, the decision came after the country’s National Telecommunications Commission received dozens of angry complaints from viewers, who were distressed that the animated series was being aired daily during an 11 a.m. time slot. A representative from Televen TV, which aired “The Simpsons,” said the show had the highest levels of viewership for that time slot in the history of the channel, but … Continue reading

Happy Birthday “General Hospital”

When I was in college I was a die-hard “General Hospital” fan. Okay, maybe I wasn’t as crazed as some other girls who rearranged their class schedule so they could watch the show each day at 2 p.m., but I was pretty dedicated. Looking back I’m not sure what it was about this particular soap that hooked me. It was probably because at the time it starred some of the best looking guys on daytime TV. But I digress. The popular soap opera is celebrating a major milestone–45 years on TV. “General Hospital” is ABC’s longest-running daytime series and has … Continue reading
