Whatever Happened to Balance and Common Sense?

Whatever happened to balance and common sense? Last week I watched a Dr. Phil show that talked about over the top ways of disciplining. In some situations the discipline actually led to death. There was one segment about a 12-year-old girl in a junior high school who was arrested because she had doodled on her desk. Of course, damaging school property is something that needs to be addressed. However keep in mind that this young girl had first of all, used an erasable marker that would have taken a few seconds to wipe off and second of all, she didn’t … Continue reading

Christmas: What Happened to It?

As I have been tying up the final loose ends for Christmas Day, I am continuously running into frazzled women. Glassy eyed, tousled hair, they seem strained, forgetful, distracted and angry. And these are not my clients; they are women trying to prepare for Christmas Day! Something has gone terribly wrong with Christmas and the festive season. High expectations, over-commercialization of Christmas – whatever it is — it is distressing grown, mature women and turning them into stressed, irritable zombies who are all repeating a surprisingly common mantra — “I just wish Christmas would be over!” Most of these women … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Blog Month in Review – October 2008

It hardly seems plausible that October is over and we are now staring ahead into November. Before I blink again, I am afraid Christmas will be here and I won’t know where the time went. Before you get all wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, be sure to check out what happened in the scrapbooking blog last month. I’d also like to encourage you to come back and visit frequently in the upcoming weeks for great gift ideas, new products and of course plenty of project ideas and other great scrapbooking related information. Here’s what … Continue reading

Whatever Happened To…

Michael Conner Humphreys. Remember him? He was the child actor who played a young Forrest Gump on the big screen. Only, unlike many young stars that break into Hollywood before they can even legally drive, Humphreys didn’t stay long. He took gigs here and there, but when he was 18 he joined the Army and fought in an unpopular war. Today, Humphreys is less than a month shy of completing his enlistment and he says he is ready to head back to the silver screen. And he won’t have to wait long before he gets paid to do so. According … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Our Whole Family Isn’t Invited to the Wedding

Question: A cousin of mine is getting married in a few months and on the invitation she invited myself and my husband but not the baby. My baby will only be 4 months old when she gets married. Isn’t it rude of her not to invite the whole family? So what should I do? Do I tell her that we won’t come unless she invites the baby? (I’m not comfortable leaving the baby as I am nursing.) Or do I go anyways despite her being selective? Since this isn’t the marriage blog I won’t spend a lot of time on … Continue reading

Whatever Happened to “Quality Time”?

In my early years of parenthood (nearly twenty years ago now) the big buzz word was “quality time”—instead of worrying about spending every waking minute with our children, we parents were encouraged to think about the quality of the time we spent with our kids. Quality was supposed to trump quantity. But, it seems that discussion has fallen out of favor, or at least fallen out of the public eye… You probably won’t be surprised to discover that I actually think that both quality and quantity are important. Now that I have lived through many years of parenting trenches, I … Continue reading

What Ever Happened to “Multi-Purpose”?

We live in an age of specialization. Of course, this isn’t the first age of specialization, but things have become so specialized that it seems we need a person, machine, and item for everything. When it comes to efficient and streamlined small business operations, whatever happened to multi-purpose? One of my favorite business technological “machines” is my multi-purpose computer printer/copier/ and fax machine. There is something about laying down money for a machine that is made more satisfying in knowing that machine can do more than one thing! Instead of how I used to do things—a separate fax machine, a … Continue reading

Whatever Happened to “Cottage Industry”

We refer to our businesses here as “home businesses” or “home-based”–whatever happened to the term “cottage industry” that used to be so prevalent? A cottage industry always meant a business or industry where the products or services were created and sold from home. Now we have micro-businesses, but the term “cottage industry” seems to have disappeared from the vernacular. I would like to know why? There used to be some romance and mythology around “cottage industry”–especially here in America where it has always been entirely plausible that a person could start a company in her garage or basement that would … Continue reading

Whatever Happened to the Summer Job?

I remember spending my summers doing all sorts of odd, summer jobs—picking beans and strawberries, cleaning houses, babysitting, hauling hay, working in restaurants—now kids seem to think they need to find a “real” job—or nothing at all. And, with all the restrictions and requirements, it has gotten tougher for teenagers and kids to find suitable work. I’m wondering whatever happened to the summer job experience for kids? As my teenagers consider finding a summer job—it seems more like a classic job search than how I remember stumbling into all sorts of summer work as a teen. They have to have … Continue reading

Whatever Happened to Drinking Water?

I’d like to find out if I’m alone here; if my family and kids are somehow freakish–is it just my kids who act like I’m offering them poison or a tainted sewer beverage when I suggest they drink a tall, cool, glass of water? I’m waiting to read the article in the paper about the mother charged with child abuse for insisting her kids drink plain old water as a thirst-quenching beverage instead of juice boxes, sparkling flavored water, gourmet organic milk, or soda. Who, knows, it might actually be me in the paper charged with abuse for being a … Continue reading
