Choosing Service to Our Country Over Fame

A while back, I had blogged about people who had a brush with fame, then left it all to become average Joes. Today, I read a story about a guy who had all the credentials to be a pro athlete, but decided to leave that behind to serve in the military. While this is not a popular decision in today’s world, during World War II, most male celebrities decided to abandon their movie careers to join the military. Our country was at a time of peril and it just seemed like the right thing to do. People like Jimmy Stewart, … Continue reading

Walking Away from Fame

I wrote earlier about Brad Renfro, a child star who seemed to make the successful leap into adult roles, but was found dead in his home yesterday. It seems that many child stars are just messed up, usually because the industry abandons them when they are no longer cute little kids anymore. But what about the people that find fame, then just walk away from it? It seems to have such a tight hold on many people once they get a taste of it, but there are a few who just went “Eh, this is okay, but maybe I will … Continue reading

The Monkees’ Davy Jones Dead at 66

If you turned on the radio today and heard a Monkees song, you might not have thought much about it. But, the radio station I listen to played several Monkee songs in a row and for a sad reason. The Monkees lead singer Davy Jones died today of a heart attack at the age of 66. My son is in second grade and when I was that age, I loved the Monkees. I mean, I LOVED them. I had their posters all over my walls, forced my parents to watch their television show – I was just terribly smitten. Of … Continue reading

Director John Hughes Dies at 59

Director/writer John Hughes never won an Oscar. In fact, he never came close – he was never nominated for an Oscar. Or, a Golden Globe for that matter. Or much of anything. The only award I could find on the Internet Movie Database was the ShoWest Producer of the Year award in 1991. But, throw out some quotes like “Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?” or “No more yanky my wanky” and most people between the ages of 50 and 30 can tell you what movies those quotes came from and chances are they will spew out more quotes from John Hughes movies. … Continue reading

It’s Twins for Molly Ringwald and a Break Up for Prince Harry

Falling under my “Better Her than Me” category, I just read that actress and ‘80s sensation Molly Ringwald is expecting twins. I find it hard to believe that the Ringwald is even old enough to have children. Yes, I know, I probably watched Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club too much, but the now 40 year old Ringwald is expecting twins with her husband Panio Gianopoulos. The couple already has a five year old daughter Mathilda Ereni. Right now, Molly is starring in the ABC Family show “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” which deals with teen pregnancy. Molly … Continue reading

Let the Dancing Begin!

Finally! After a long summer my toe-tapping, tutu wearing, twirling toddler (okay, she’s more preschooler than toddler) will once again get to shimmy and shake with the best of them. ABC’s hit show “Dancing with the Stars” kicks off its seventh season next month and now we know, which celebs will be waltzing their way to that hideous mirror ball trophy. Take a look: Toni Braxton–The 41-year-old Grammy Award-winner has been paired with season one “DWTS” champ Alec Mazo. Lance Bass– The 29-year-old former ‘N SYNC singer will be two-stepping with Lacey Schwimmer a new addition to DWTS. (You might … Continue reading

Frugal Living Month in Review: June 2008

What a happy month is June, filled with the renewal of spring and the promise of summer. In the last month, we have shared so many ideas for frugal living and saving money. This past month has seen some pretty big increases in food, gas and other items (look for an upcoming post about strawberries increasing more than 100 percent). Now more than ever, it is important to save money where we can. This is why I decided to do a month in review. June 2nd Frugal Living Review: May 26th Through June 1st Garage sale shopping has got to … Continue reading

Saving Money While Celebrating the Fourth with Family on the Road

Chock it up to the exorbitant price of gas, or perhaps the summer traffic, either way a new AAA report says many Americans plan to spend the Fourth of July holiday closer to home this year. The news has sparked lodgings in the Northeastern portion of the U.S. to offer amazing summer savings to families who want to hit the highway and spend the holiday weekend away from home. Take a look: NEW HAMPSHIRE Your family can take a step back in time and enjoy an old-fashioned Fourth of July at the Sunset House in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire for … Continue reading

The Ups And Downs Of Celebrity

Did you know actor Barry Williams had dreams of becoming an Air Force pilot before he hit in big in Hollywood? The “Brady Bunch” star admitted he considered joining the military like his father, but instead he stuck with acting and gained fame as the oldest of three brothers on the popular TV series. Who knew Williams would get a second shot at his dream? More than 40 years after expressing interest in joining the military, the 53-year-old former heartthrob was made an honorary member of the Air Force’s 4th Fighter Wing’s 335th Fighter Squadron. Last week Williams got the … Continue reading

FYI: Cool Pet/Animal Tip Offs Fellow Families.com Members Have Shared With Me

The other day I wrote about My Life as a Pets Blogger Parts I and II, but something I forgot to mention is how sometimes people pass neat stories or otherwise pet-related info my way. (Like Aimee did with an article that I referenced in Michael Vick Learns Animal Lovers Are a Force to Be Reckoned With.) Well, Aimee’s done it again, but so have a couple of others. I’d like to share with you what they shared with me, because you might find it equally interesting. The Michael Vick Pet Chew Toy This one came to me again courtesy … Continue reading
