Vampires on the Big Screen

The film Twilight, about the teen Bella Swan who finds herself in love with vampire Edward Cullen, brought in a staggering $70.6 million on it’s opening three day weekend. The success of the first of Stephenie Meyer’s books on the big screen started me to thinking of classic vampires through the years. There was the first vampire character, played by Max Schreck. Schreck was a German actor who played the lead role in Nosferatu. I’ve heard that Schreck was so convincing that some moviegoers actually thought he really was a vampire. A Vampire Tragedy

I have several friends that have gotten all wrapped up in the “Twilight” series of books and movies. Team Edward and Team Jacob comments are thrown around on Facebook and many lament the end of the series with the upcoming The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, which comes out on November 16th. Now it seems as if the saga may not be the only thing ending. For what seems like years, the stars of the movie, Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson, have denied being in a relationship, despite the love between their on screen personas. Well, let me … Continue reading

Katie Holmes Files for Divorce – Part 2

In my last blog, I was talking about Tom Cruise’s many exes. Yesterday, we learned that Katie Holmes will soon join that exclusive club as she filed for divorce. While Cruise was married to Nicole Kidman and dating Penelope Cruz, Holmes was busy dating actor Chris Klein. The two became engaged, but broke up in 2005. That same year, Holmes began dating Cruise. Now, I don’t know how they met, but Star Magazine reported that Cruise’s agent called Holmes publicist for a meeting between the two. How romantic is that? Just pluck your next young wife out of the phone … Continue reading

Twilight … His and Hers?

A friend introduced me to the Twilight series, and I admit, I found the books interesting, even though I didn’t jump on the whole “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob” bandwagon or buy T-shirts with the characters’ faces on them. The phenomenon certainly has swept the nation, though—so much so that many authors are trying to hit the same demographic and have started writing more vampire stories than ever before. I worked for a publishing house last year, and asked my husband to start skimming the submissions for me and tell me which ones were Twilight knock-offs and which weren’t. I … Continue reading

Anne Rice Changes Her Mind about Christianity…Sort Of

Remember when vampire queen Anne Rice announced she was a Christian? She had written the successful novels “Interview with the Vampire,” “The Vampire Lestat,” and “The Queen of the Damned.” Under the pseudonym of A.N. Roquelaure, she wrote three erotic novels. But, in 2004, Rice said in a Newsweek article that she would start writing “only for the Lord.” Some of her fans were put out a bit by this news, but she was true to her word. In 2005, Rice wrote “Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt” about the early years of Jesus Christ. She followed that up with … Continue reading

Are You a Closet “Twilight” Mom?

What is it about a vampire-werewolf-teenage schoolgirl love triangle that turns some moms to mush? “Some” moms… hmmm… make that millions of moms. Stephanie Meyer’s popular “Twilight” series about the mystical secrets involving Edward the vampire, Jacob the werewolf, and Bella the sweet schoolgirl loved by both of them, became an overnight success thanks in large part to the gazillions of teen fans who became enraptured by the books and subsequent big screen adaptation. But somewhere along the way, Meyer and her vampire romance sucked in a slew of ordinary moms. Only not all of them are willing to share … Continue reading

Forbes Celebrity 100 List for 2009

Angelina Jolie seems to be everywhere and now she has bumped Oprah of all people out of the number one position on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list. Oh, don’t worry, Oprah still earns more than Angelina (who only earned $27 million last year compared to Oprah’s $257 million), but maybe getting to go home to Brad Pitt every night gave Angelina a bit of an edge. Okay, actually it was Angelina’s fame that put her on top, but then you have to give Brad and the children some credit for that. For landing in the number one position, Forbes says … Continue reading

Tom Cruise Regretful of ‘Glib’ Comment

Tom Cruise has been many things –movie star, three time husband, father of three, Scientologist spokesman – but one would hardly call him humble. However, after several years of outrageous, unheard of (at least in his case) antics, Tom Cruise is now admitting he has had at least one regret moment. Cruise returned to the “Today” show to admit that his tongue lashing of Matt Lauer four years ago was a bit over the top. In the original interview with Lauer, Cruise argued that psychiatry was a “pseudoscience.” When Lauer tried to say he knew people that psychiatry had helped, … Continue reading

The Golden Globes are Announced

The Golden Globes award ceremony will be on NBC on January 11th, provided there isn’t another strike (and yes, there is a potential actors strike brewing). Today, we learned who might just win at the 66th annual Golden Globes. For Best Drama, the race is between Brad Pitt’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the historical piece Frost/Nixon, The Reader (about a German lawyer, a woman he loves, and Nazi war crime trials), Revolutionary Road (based on the novel by Richard Yates about a couple in the ‘50s), and Slumdog Millionaire (about a Hindi orphan who stands to win 20 … Continue reading
