Shatner Gets The Shaft

Star Trek fans brace yourselves… the original Capt. Kirk won’t be taking flight on the starship Enterprise this time round. In news that was as shocking to Trekkies as it was to “Kirk,” producers of the new “Star Trek” movie recently announced that actor William Shatner will not appear in the upcoming production. “I couldn’t believe it. I’m not in the movie at all.” Shatner told news reporters a few days ago. “I thought, what a decision to make, since it obviously is a decision not to make use of the popularity I have to ensure the movie has good … Continue reading

Professor Randy “Last Lecture” Pausch Dies

The thoughtful, intelligent, caring man millions of women dreamed of having as their husband is dead tonight. Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon computer-sciences professor, who inspired the world with his September 2007 lecture, entitled “Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,” lost his fight against terminal pancreatic cancer early this morning at his Virginia home. According to reports, the 47-year-old husband and father of three young children passed away in bed surrounded by his immediate family. I first learned about Pausch on a rainy Friday night in 2007 during a Person of the Week segment on “ABC News With Charles Gibson.” The story … Continue reading

Stars Making History on Screen and Off

In the battle over the longest-running role in ad industry Captain Kirk has put the smackdown on Fat Albert. They are two men you rarely see in the same room together let alone the same TV spot, but William Shatner and Bill Cosby recently battled it out for top banana of television commercials. Shatner just celebrated his 10th anniversary with the online travel company Priceline.com and has now eclipsed Cosby (who remarkably was up for the same role) as longest running pitchman for a name brand company. Priceline execs say the former Captain Kirk beat out the former Cliff Huxtable … Continue reading

If The Shoe Fits

I would venture to guess that most Americans have donned a pair of Nike shoes at some point in their lives. I completed three marathons wearing Nike running shoes. The particular shoe I wear addresses my needs as a severe over-pronator. But, as I’m sure you are well aware Nike offers dozens of different styles of athletic shoes, and now their latest creation is making headlines. For the first time in the company’s history it has created a shoe specifically for American Indians. Designers say they did so in an effort to promote physical fitness in the population that is … Continue reading

Scotty’s Ashes Beamed Up To Space

Okay, be honest. How many times have you used the phrase “Beam me up Scotty?” Whether you are a “Star Trek” fan or not, the iconic line from the original TV series is likely one you’ve heard or employed yourself since it was first used in the late 1960’s. Decades later, the line is taking on new meaning as reports confirm that the ashes of James Doohan, who played chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott on the original show, are one step closer to being beamed up into space. According to media reports, Doohan’s cremated remains were placed aboard a spaceship … Continue reading

How Much Would You Pay For Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Cloak?

I love auctions, especially the ones that include movie and TV memorabilia. I could never afford to bid on any of the pieces, but I never tire of hearing what others are willing to shell out for a piece of Hollywood history. Recently, the company, Angels The Costumiers, hosted an auction in an effort to cut insurance costs. It put more than 400 movie, TV and theater costumes from its 1.5 million-piece collection on the block and opened the bidding. To say that the auction was a success would be an understatement. According to the company’s president, there was no … Continue reading

Meet RITA Award-Winning Author Linnea Sinclair and Her Cover Model Cat Daq

In 2006, Linnea Sinclair’s book Gabriel’s Ghost won the Romance Writers of America’s RITA award for Best Paranormal Romance. Her next book, Games of Command, is set to be released on February 27, 2007. But this book is a little different than some of her others, because her cat Daq was not only the inspiration for one of the characters, he’s also on the cover! As he said when I contacted his mom about an interview: “I know you are speechless at how handsome I am. Everyone reacts the same way. Don’t worry. You’re also speechless at how small my … Continue reading

Star Trek Hits the Big 4-0

For a little show that only lasted three years, Star Trek has certainly made a name for itself. Most shows that last such a short amount of time are lucky if they even make it into syndication. Today is the 40th anniversary of the first showing of Star Trek on NBC. Unlikely as it sounds, it premiered right after Daniel Boone. But if you doubt the cultural significance of Star Trek, consider the impact it has had on the entertainment industry. Star Trek has spawned four spin-offs (The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine, and Enterprise), an animated series (The … Continue reading
