Mother’s Blog About Mentally Ill Son Goes Viral

A mother has written a blog that has been passed around the internet via Facebook and in links in several other blogs and news articles. In it, she discusses her fear that her son will someday do something similar to what Adam Lanza did in Connecticut. It is an eye-opening piece of writing. Yesterday, I wrote a blog that clarified that not all people who have Asperger’s Syndrome are violent. Some can, and do, express loud, verbal, outbursts or may push someone away from them. Typically, the violence that people with Asperger’s Syndrome express is not premeditated or planned out. … Continue reading

What Problems Do Parents of Russian Adoptees Face?

Most of the world is justly horrified by the fact that Torry Hansen sent her adopted Russian son back to Russia. I admit I don’t know how I would respond if my child threatened to kill me. But as I said in my blog on Wrongful Adoption lawsuits, once an adoption is final, the parent-child relationship is final. If my biological child suffers brain trauma and becomes a danger to others, he may have to live in a residential treatment center, but I would still visit him, try to assist in his healing process, contribute financially to him as much … Continue reading

Russian Pop Star Claims to be Mel Gibson’s Other Woman

And you thought divorces only affected the warring parties and their children… In an example of just how far-reaching Mel Gibson’s split has become, consider the impact it has had on a woman named Oksana Kolesnikova. The married Russian classical pianist was mistakenly cited by numerous publications as the woman responsible for causing the demise of Mel Gibson’s 28-year-old marriage to his wife Robyn. Only Kolesnikova has never met the movie star. Apparently, several media sources who printed Kolesnikova’s name only got half their facts right. The alleged “mystery woman” photographed canoodling with Gibson on a beach near his Costa … Continue reading

More Hollywood Splits Plus One Marriage

I just want to finish my “In Memoriam 2011” series, but celebs just won’t stop announcing splits. First up is Debra Messing. The “Will and Grace” actress announced she split from hubby of 10 years, actor-television producer Daniel Zelman. The two met while students at New York University and dated for years before making it official in 2000. They have a seven-year-old son, Roman. But, this breakup will be a bit like a Demi/Bruce one in that it seems to be terribly amicable. So much so that the couple have been separated for most of 2011, but still lived together. … Continue reading

Accent-uate the Positive

“Buddy,” I call outside to my 7-year-old daughter. “Time for dinner.” “Bud! Dinner!” I yell after seeing her whiz past the kitchen window on her scooter. The speeding scooter passes by the window a half-dozen more times. “Honey, we’re eating NOW!” I bellow through clenched teeth, desperately trying not to attract the attention of the entire neighborhood. “I KNOW YOU CAN HEAR…” before I can finish my little speed demon zooms into the garage looks me square in the eye and in her best, bad Russian accent quips: “Hello, my name Peggy. You got problem?” Thanks, Discovery Card. You and … Continue reading

United Nations Passes Historic Resolution

This past Friday, the United Nations (U.N.) passed a ground breaking resolution – for equal rights for everyone, including those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) community. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State International Organizations Suzanne Nossel called it “a key part in setting a new norm that gay rights are human rights and that that has to be accepted globally.” President Barack Obama called it a “significant milestone in the long struggle for [LGBT] equality.” The resolution was introduced by South Africa. What makes it so ground breaking? It is the first ever U.N. resolution that includes equal … Continue reading

International vs Domestic Adoption

We have friends that are in China adopting a beautiful baby girl right now. The journey for them to adopt a baby from China started over five years ago. They knew since they got married that they wanted to adopt a baby girl from China they just did not realize how long the process would take. When you do an international adoption there are rules and guidelines that the country of origin requires for international adoption. It does not happen as fast as you see when some famous celebrity goes to a country and comes right home with a baby. … Continue reading

Choosing to Hear Each Other

I was going to call this blog, “How Neglecting to Pay Attention to What One’s Spouse is Saying Can Result in Burned Croissants for Dinner,” but I decided that would be a little too long. Instead, I went with a title that more closely reflected my real message—how hearing each other is a choice, and something we do deliberately. The other night, I was cleaning out my kitchen and I decided that dinner would be comprised of all those little odds and ends that are leftover from six months’ worth of larger projects. You know how it is – you … Continue reading

Karim the Cross-Country Cat

It’s like many movies I watched growing up: The Austrian Times reports that a domesticated cat did what many invading armies have failed to do, travel 2,000 miles across Russia all on its own. Two years ago the owners of Karim, a gray house cat, moved from their home in Uzbekistan to Liska, Russia. They didn’t think Karim would handle such a long-distance move very well, so they made the devastating decision to leave Karim with their neighbors. But Karim’s owners didn’t just dump him off on the first people they could find to take him. To try to ease … Continue reading
