A Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ

At this time of year, the focus seems to be mostly upon the Baby Jesus who was born in a manger. At Easter, we think about the Atonement, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. What do we think about the remainder of the year? Having a personal relationship with our Savior is a crucial part of our exaltation. As we come to know Him, we come to understand the role He played in our redemption, and how we absolutely cannot return to our Heavenly Father without the Savior. Everything we are and have is possible because of Jesus Christ. He created … Continue reading

The Return of Baby Jesus

Just in time for Christmas baby Jesus has been returned to his manger… make that 32 Jesuses. Call it a Christmas miracle, of sorts. Chicago homeowners whose statutes of baby Jesus were stolen from their outdoor nativity scenes have finally been reunited with their missing items. According to local police, dozens of plastic baby Jesus dolls were stolen last week from nativity scenes in people’s front yards. Then on Saturday morning a woman found all the missing Jesuses lined up along the fence on her lawn and called her local church. The pastor there told local news reporters that the … Continue reading

What I Believe-Baptism

In most churches, baptism or christening is a part of the religion. Some religions do it when you are just a baby with a sprinkling of water, others believe in full immersion in water. We also believe in baptism, and here is a little bit about what we believe. First, we believe it is important for several reasons. First, Christ was baptized. Yet, we know He was perfect, and without sin. So, why was He baptized? We believe it was a vital part of God’s plan, and that without baptism, you cannot return and live with God again. We believe … Continue reading

Christmas Joy

On Sunday we want to our sister church- the other church that belongs to our parish. We were greeted the door by children dressed as Mary, Joseph and shepherds and what was, with a bit of imagination,a donkey. In reality he was a huge grey shaggy Irish wolfhound, the size of pony and sporting a pair of gray donkey ears. But what a charming and well behaved donkey he made, as he walked in with the children to be part of the nativity scene up the front near the Christmas tree that with its central branch and two large branches … Continue reading

Author Interview – Janet Kay Jensen

Today we are joined by Janet Kay Jensen, author of “The Booklover’s Cookbook” and “Don’t You Marry the Mormon Boys.” Janet, your new book “Don’t You Marry the Mormon Boys” came out at a time that was very significant in our current affairs. Warren Jeffs was on the front of every newspaper. Did his story inspire you to write the book at that time, or was the book already in the works and came out coincidentally at the same time the Jeffs story broke? I actually started the book in 2000, when Warren Jeffs was not on the FBI’s Most … Continue reading

Reflections of Christ

This last weekend, I had the opportunity to fly down to Arizona on business and I stopped by the Mesa Temple with some friends. The grounds were lovely, covered in citrus trees and flowers. A heady scent filled the air, and it was so peaceful and serene. We stepped into the Visitors Center, not dressed to enter the temple itself. The same spirit that fills the temple was also in the Visitors Center and I took a deep breath, feeling the love of our Heavenly Father. The sister missionary who acted as tour guide motioned for us to enter a … Continue reading

Gospel Questions: What about Infant Baptism?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe strongly in the ordinance of baptism. We believe that it is a necessary step toward returning to our Heavenly Father. We are taught that no unclean thing can enter Heaven, and it is through baptism and repentance that we become clean, and therefore, we must be baptized. There is no way around it. However, we do differ from some other churches in that we do not baptize our infants. We wait until the child is eight years old. We do this because we believe that baptism is more than … Continue reading

While Shepherds Watched – Jenni Fleetwood

“While Shepherds Watched” is a children’s picture book written to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child. Today Matthias turns eight, and he gets to go out into the fields to take care of the sheep tonight. He’s looked forward to this for a long time. As he heads out to take his place, it gets dark quickly, and he’s a little bit nervous. As he watches the sheep huddle together for warmth, he notices that one of the ewes is standing apart from the rest. John, who is four years older than Matthias, explains that the ewe will deliver … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Bless the Children

Matthew 25 is a continuation of the previous chapter, with no break in Christ’s teaching. Therefore, Jesus is still speaking on the second coming. I intended to start with the first parable, that of the ten virgins. However, in the very first verse, I was routed astray! The footnote in verse one sends us to D&C 45:56-59, where we learn a little more about the elect. In this modern revelation, Christ states that when He returns to Earth again, the parable of the ten virgins will be fulfilled. He discusses the characteristics of those who will be blessed. In verse … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Faithful and Wise Servant

For the last blog on this week’s Sunday School lesson, I’d like to examine the parable of the servants given in JS-M 1:49-55. In this parable, the master departs, leaving a servant in charge of his household. The wise servant is anxiously engaged in doing the work the master left for him, but the evil servant is slothful and spends his time in riotous living. When the master returns, the servant receives his reward. Elder Bruce R. McConkie states in his book Doctrinal New Testament Commentary that “Jesus speaks here of his ministers, his servants, the holders of his holy … Continue reading
