Beauty Queen Told to GAIN Weight

Just file it under “Things You Don’t Hear Everyday.” Did you happen to see Miss England Georgia Horsley’s interview on NBC’s “Today” show on Friday? The British beauty queen revealed to “Today” show co-host Meredith Vieira that she was asked to “pack on a few pounds” for the upcoming Miss World pageant. You read that right—GAIN weight, not lose it. The 20-year-old beauty contestant says she was shocked by the request mainly because she is far from rail-thin. The 5-foot-8, Horsley weighs about 125 pounds and says she sports a boyish, athletic-type figure as opposed to the voluptuous curvy figures … Continue reading

Drama Queen Lives Up To Her Name

There are drama queens… and then there are Paris Hilton-like drama queens. The former find it seemingly impossible to ride life’s ups and downs and often make mountains out of molehills by twisting facts or misinterpreting events so they can appear to be the victim. The latter, well, let’s just say they are in their own self absorbed universe and it’s rare when their daily actions aren’t covered by a flock of photographers and reporters. Such is the life of Paris Hilton, only in the days following her sentence of 45 days behind bars for violating probation the socialite has … Continue reading

The Queen of Queens

For the last five years or so I have been an avid fan of the CBS sitcom “The King of Queens.” Believe it or not, it is one of the only shows on television that my entire family will sit down and watch together. (I know… don’t ask.) Well, tonight (after a nine-year run) the popular show comes to an end. (Reruns will continue to air in syndication, but the original shows end tonight.) That means no more hilarious squabbles between Kevin James and Jerry Stiller’s characters (first he departs from my favorite Thursday night show “Seinfeld” and now Stiller … Continue reading

Introducing the New Education Blog

Ah, the brand new blog all about education! This is a huge topic, so we will address as many current issues and questions as we can – your comments and suggestions and ideas are not only welcome, they are needed! One of the best things about a blog like this is that we can not only keep people informed about what is going on with education, but we can discuss ideas and share them. We are all a community of learners. I was a substitute teacher for several years in New York City, while working on my degree in elementary … Continue reading

Why We Started Gardening for Food

After many years of talking about it, we are actually going to put in a food garden. This is a big step for us. I’m originally from Queens, NY, and my husband is from Joisey (new Jersey). There isn’t a lot of gardening going on there (although New Jersey is the self-proclaimed garden state). It is time, though, with food prices going higher, and our desire to eat organic produce, we can’t put it off any longer. The initial investment of putting in a garden should pay off for our family for years. We are going to start out small … Continue reading

How to Score Big Savings on the Road

When you are looking for ways to reduce travel expenses start small.  You may be surprised to see that in no time those minor moves can add up to big savings. Here are a few simple money-saving tips to get you started: Stay at a hotel that offers complimentary breakfast, and then take an extra apple, banana, yogurt or granola bar to eat as a mid-afternoon or late-night snack.  It beats spending additional money feeding the vending machine or calling room service when you get hungry later in the day. Bypass big city restaurants and dine at a cheaper … Continue reading

Teenager with Autism Wants to Become Miss America

Eighteen year old Alexis Wineman wants to become the next Miss America. She is the currently reigning Miss Montana, pretty, and has an autism spectrum disorder. If she wins the crown, she will be the very first Miss America who has autism. That is her quest. When you think about the Miss America pageant, you are either looking forward to watching it or are intending to avoid it. Beauty pageants, in general, are something that can be viewed as controversial. On the one hand, it is a contest that is primarily about the physical appearance of the contestants (all of … Continue reading

The Technology Band Uses iPads

High school students in Queens, New York, are using the iPad as a musical instrument. The students have been described as having “severe learning disabilities”, and many have an autism spectrum disorder. Their teacher, Adam Goldberg, found a way to use the iPad to enable the students to make music. This is amazing! It has been known, for quite some time, that the iPad is incredibly useful for students with a variety of learning disabilities and special needs. One example of this is how the Milford school district, in Connecticut, uses the iPad with students who have autism. The school … Continue reading
