Vocal Power

So… my son has figured out that he has a secret power over his parents and that power is the ability to produce a LOUD VOLUME in quiet places. He now happily talks to himself or his shadow as he plays with his toys or tries to fit something that had been discarded onto the floor into his mouth (his recent favorite is unused tissue paper). This babbling has broken into a new found vocal power that he unleashed at us while we were at church this past Sunday (while out of town). Luckily my son is cute. This stops … Continue reading

Fatherhood and Manly Things…

…like CARS! Okay, so this is going to sound pathetic and sad but I don’t really care about cars at all. I really know anything about them either. I’m interested in computers and theatre. I’m not really even a sports guy. Today, though, I did something I’ve never done on a car before and I’m going to brag about it. I changed… the AIR FILTER! (I told you this was going to sound pathetic.) Now before you start decrying my manhood I would like it to be known that I’ve build a number of theatrical sets, used a variety of … Continue reading

Baby Girl Power

Girls rule in Hollywood! It’s a girl and a girl… and another girl for some of Tinseltown’s biggest names. Earlier today actress Jennifer Garner and her actor hubby Ben Affleck welcomed a second daughter into their family. According to reports, Garner gave birth to a baby girl at a Los Angeles hospital and both mom and baby are doing well. The superstar couple has yet to release their newborn’s name. However, rumor has it that the acting pair’s 3-year-old daughter Violet had a hand in naming her new sibling. The former “Alias” star and her Oscar-winning hubby have made it … Continue reading

The Subjective Experience of Being a Father

What does it mean to be a father? How do I “be” a father? What does a father “do?” What does being a dad mean to you? Like my Scandinavian ancestors and relatives, I like to tease and joke with my children. I get the better part of the relationship, though. They have a funnier sense of humor than I do. But they know their father cares and interacts with them, and sometimes they even laugh at my jokes and teasing. Of course being a father is more than just horsing around. We go to work daily, if we can, … Continue reading

Achieving a Low Risk Pregnancy

I am a type A personality. I like organization, structure, and well thought out plans. When I set a goal, I do everything in my power (within reason) to reach that goal. Before my husband and I began trying to achieve our first pregnancy, I began extensive research on pregnancy. I researched all the possible birthing options in my area. What I discovered from my research was the tools to have the best possible outcome for pregnancy and birth. While both of my pregnancy and birth experience were different, my goal for a low risk and (mostly) complication free (the … Continue reading

Week Twenty Seven

Week twenty seven has been largely uneventful in the world of pregnancy. I began the week with the same determination to maintain my pregnancy food journal and exercise routine. It has gotten easier to stay on track and I do not feel as deprived as I did when I started keeping tabs on everything. I feel like I am back in control again and that is incredibly empowering and it gives me even more motivation. This week I officially put away all my pre-pregnancy clothes. Thankfully the weather has continued to be fairly cool so my fall/winter maternity wardrobe is … Continue reading

Spitting Water

I’m an elemental sort of guy: my favorite theatre (now sadly closed) always included natural elements into their productions; the plays I write tend to focus on natural elements. Natural elements are of a particular value. They make you feel closer to the earth itself, closer to the source. There is a reason that songs are written about stars, baptisms involve water, and cowboys ride off into the sunset. There is something we yearn for in those natural elements. They give meaning that transcends the everyday. Elements are imbued with a power when considered by our soul. All that poetry, … Continue reading

The Future DJ

When our son was growing in his mother’s womb we bombarded him with music. At first it was sort of a joke. Headphones on the belly were a funny thing to do. It allowed us to share our favorite music, things that moved us, our influences, to our son before he was born. I shared my favorite bands and my wife shared a healthy dose of pop music with bass beats. We both shared wonderful piano transcriptions and orchestrated masterpieces with our son. Later on, when we found out he was breech, playing music was one of the many suggested … Continue reading

Insurance for Bottles of Wine

Are you a wine lover? There seems to be a growing number of people who want to get insurance to protect their bottles of wine. Those that have been collecting bottles of wine for years may have some really expensive assets to insure against accidental breakage. You don’t necessarily need to have a wine cellar in order to collect wine. Many wine lovers store their wine in their kitchens, on wine racks of various sizes and styles. This makes a certain kind of sense, when you think about it, because a lot of the people who collect wine are doing … Continue reading

Little Singer

During the past week I’ve been excited by my favorite band releasing a new album. It was a wonderful surprise and I couldn’t have been happier. Their last album was over three years ago and music is a powerful thing. They’ve been a part of my life for well over a decade. Strangely enough, they have a part in the story of our son’s life too. When our son was in utero and breech we were given a variety of things to try in order to coax him into the right position. For a while my wife spent time upside … Continue reading
