TIME’s List of 30 Most Influential Teens of 2017

TIME creates an annual list of the 30 most influential teens. When the TIME staff puts the list together, they consider accolades across numerous fields, global impact through social media, and overall ability to drive news. Here is a quick look at just a few of the teenagers who TIME considers to be among the 30 Most Influential Teens of 2017. Rayouf Alhumedhi is sixteen-years-old. She is from Saudi Arabia, is muslim, and wears a headscarf. When she searched for a headscarf emoji, she couldn’t find one. Rayouf started a campaign for the headscarf emoji, and appealed to both Apple … Continue reading

Simple Life is the Most Rewarding

Leading the simple life is not only less expensive, but it can be more rewarding, too. The last few days after Christmas have been wonderful. We’ve spent no money at all, but we have been having the best time. Days have been spent playing board games, cooking good meals, watching a gentle snowfall and the winter birds outside our windows, visiting neighbors, making a snowman, drinking hot chocolate, watching a Star Wars marathon, and just being together. It has been a perfect time after the busy Christmas rush. The simple life. Today, we’ll go to church and maybe hike through a … Continue reading

Making the Most of Leftovers

Tis the season to go through your scrapbooking stash. The holidays are a great time to assess the type and amount of scrapbook materials you have in stock.  The items that you want can be added to your Christmas wish list, while the leftovers can be used to craft end-of-the-year memory books. Taking inventory of your scrapbooking paper, embellishments and albums may sound like a pain, but in the long run it can prove to be a very cost-effective exercise.  In addition, finding ways to repurpose existing materials is a wonderful way to flex your creative muscle. Here are some … Continue reading

Avoid the Bedtime Battle

Daylight saving time ends in the wee hours of Sunday morning. For many parents, the occasion can be bittersweet. While “falling back” yields an extra hour to spend however you desire, it can also mean extra-tired kids whose bodies don’t acclimate well to time changes. My daughter is a warrior when it comes to bedtime. The kid fights off sleep like a Roman gladiator. She’s Spartacus, sleep is the enemy, and I have to suffer through the nightly battle. Add in the whole turn-your-clocks-back-an-hour business and things can get rough. Fortunately, there are ways you can avoid going to war … Continue reading

The Gift of Time

We’re coming up on my absolute favorite day of the year. Sunday marks the end of daylight-saving time. Get ready to move those clocks back an hour to standard time and relish the extra 60 minutes of shut-eye. With all due respect to Christmas, Thanksgiving and Mother’s Day, which are all very special occasions, it’s hard to compete against a day that showers millions with the precious gift of time. Think about it; how many times in the course of a single day do you wish you could wave a magic wand and be granted extra time to tackle the … Continue reading

End-of-the-School-Year Bliss

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… Sing it with me. No more pencils, no more books, no more dragging kids out of bed, no more making lunches at 5 a.m., no more threatening children to finish their homework, no more last-minute scrambles to find missing socks and backpacks while the school bus sits at the end of the driveway… I’m done. Thank goodness, the end of the school year is just around the corner. Thankful. Thankful. Thankful. That’s me. While some parents are cursing the end of the academic year, I couldn’t be happier. In fact, I’m not … Continue reading

Organizing For Tax Time

There is never a more important time to be organized than tax season. It’s so important to know where all of your important paperwork is so that you can maximize your refund, or at least reduce your liability. If you are running around looking for receipts and other important papers, now is the time to get organized for next year. Start a file right now for 2012 taxes. Put everything in there, if you are unsure if something is deductible, throw it in there any way and you can sort it out when the time comes. I use a file … Continue reading

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

The end of daylight savings. Best. Day. Ever! As a parent of a 7-year-old, falling back an hour to standard time is the most wonderful time of the year. Forget about Mother’s Day, Christmas, birthday, anniversary, Valentine’s Day or Thanksgiving, when else is the gift of time presented to you on a silver platter? A glorious extra hour to sleep, play, read, wash dishes, fold laundry, sew, attempt to procreate, or do nothing at all, is something you can’t put a price tag on. Think about it; all the complaining we parents do about time flying, how there is never … Continue reading

Great-Aunts are Wonderful

Some parts of your family tree are easy to figure out. Most genealogists can fill in the blanks for their parents and siblings without having to think much about it. Things get a bit more complex when you try and sort out how you are related to your great-aunts. I recently attended my sister’s wedding. As expected, there were plenty of relatives that came to the wedding. It has been a long time since I had seen or talked to many of them, so it was really nice to have the opportunity to catch up. Even though I haven’t been … Continue reading
