Is Your Job Overrated?

The other day, Stephanie Romero wrote a wonderful post about the most depressing jobs. Recently, I came across an article on CNBC that talked about the twelve most overrated jobs. This is a topic near and dear to my heart, not only because one of my jobs is on this list but also because some of these jobs are the kinds of things that well meaning parents push their children to aspire to even though they do not really know anything about what having one of those jobs is really like. I know from experience that it is hard to … Continue reading

The Most Overrated

No, no, this is not my personal list (which would surely start with Britney Spears and Hooters food), but it is a list from Radar Magazine. Who or what is the most overrated? Well, sorry to say Brits, but the magazine deemed your beloved David and Victoria Beckham as the winners of this dubious award. They said that David is an overpaid soccer star (true) and Victoria is a “pointless collection of body parts.” Ouch. I agree they are overrated, but I think they should also be #1 in the Most Overexposed category as well (along with Tom, Katie, and … Continue reading

The Importance of Not Sharing

It’s one of life’s most important lessons and it doesn’t come easy. Sharing is a challenging concept for many adults to master, so imagine the toll it takes on preschoolers. Most preschool curriculums incorporate a slew of opportunities for four year olds to learn the fine art of sharing.  They are taught to be generous with their possessions so their peers don’t feel left out.  However, is sharing really caring?  Does it really matter if kids share and share alike? Some educators don’t think so. In fact, a growing number of preschools are putting the kibosh on forced sharing in … Continue reading

Learning How to Keep House

Did anyone teach you how to keep house or did you just absorb it? I don’t remember anyone teaching me how to cook and clean, I was just surrounded by full time homemakers and I learned by watching them. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was small and always “helped” my grandmother around the house. I’m not sure she would have called it help but she let me do it anyway. I was raised in a generation of women who were still mostly stay at home mothers. I saw women cooking, cleaning and doing laundry … Continue reading

Finding Work That Fits You

Yesterday I wrote about how some jobs that many people consider desirable are actually overrated if you take a closer look at what it is really like to have them. Earlier this month, my colleague Stephanie Romero wrote about a list of the most depressing jobs. I have one job from each of those lists, yet I can honestly say that I love what I do for work. In my opinion, the key to being able to love your work no matter what list or lists it appears on is finding work that fits you well. In order to find … Continue reading

Television Shows: Renewed, Cancelled, and in Limbo

Are you wondering if your favorite television show is going to be renewed? Most networks still have until late May to make a final announcement of their fall lineups, but here are some of the shows we know we will or won’t see again. Some of the ABC shows that have officially been renewed are “Brothers & Sisters,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost,” “Private Practice,” and “Ugly Betty.” There had been fear by fans that “Ugly Betty” would be cancelled after ratings dropped in season 3. NBC actually renewed “Friday Night Lights” for two more seasons, despite the fact that … Continue reading

A Different Approach to Valentine’s Day

‘Valentine’s Day is every day, or it should be.’ That’s what my darling husband said when I told him the title of my yesterday’s blog. You see, he agrees with me in thinking Valentines Day is overrated. He also believes, as I do, there’s no point making a big fuss over your spouse on that one day of the year if you’re not going to keep it up every day of every year. Okay, so you may not be able to afford gifts every day of the year, (and neither should you have to) but you can still show by … Continue reading

Balancing One-on-One with Group Socializing

Helping and guiding our children as they develop social skills is just one of the many challenges of parenting. Most of us want our children to have friends and an active social life, but we want to keep things in perspective too—and help our children learn how to keep things in balance. One area where we can help our children learn to maneuver in the social realm is in balancing out one-on-one friendships and social activities with group socializing. One-on-one socializing or establishing and maintaining those close and intimate friendships is an important part of life. It is also an … Continue reading

A Couple of Tips for Surviving the Holidays with Baby

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and many of us will be traveling for Thanksgiving, or preparing to host our own feast with family and friends. This will mark the first year for us, in which we do not have to do Thanksgiving with a baby under 24 months of age. That would make a total of 7 years in a row with a baby in tow for the holidays. With that said, here are a few of our tips for getting through the holidays. It All Revolves Around the Baby We have learned over the years that holidays must … Continue reading
