My Baby: A Bottomless Pit

These days, I’m convinced my 1-year-old has some extra storage space in her stomach she’s hiding from me. She’s not a big kid. She was huge at 6 months of age, then completely thinned out. In fact, I’m pretty sure her weight has stayed the same from 6 months until now. You’d think that a little peanut like her would have the appetite of a bird. No siree. That girl can pack food in like nobody’s business. A month ago, we’d eat breakfast together, and she’d consume a small amount of my daily bowl of oatmeal. Now, I have to … Continue reading

The Man With The Bottomless Stomach Injures Jaw

A few months ago I blogged about meeting Takeru Kobayashi. The man is an eating machine and has rapidly become a pop culture icon for his ability to win just about every eating contest known to man. Last year he was in Wisconsin to participate in a bratwurst eating contest and he didn’t disappoint. The native of Japan flew to the Dairy State and devoured 58 bratwurst in 10 minutes. It was quite possibly the most stomach churning sight I have ever witnessed in my life (but exhilarating at the same time). That day Kobayashi set the world record for … Continue reading

World’s Largest Preschooler Eats Like an Elephant

Technically, 5-year-old Suman Khatun hasn’t been officially crowned the world’s heaviest preschooler, but she is well on her way… to eating herself to death. The West Bengal preschooler has made headlines around the world for her inability to satisfy her hunger. According to reports, the 42-inch girl, who tops the scales at a whopping 168 pounds, consumes more calories in a single day than most kids her age do in a month. In an average week Suman devours nearly 25 pounds of rice, 24 eggs, 11 pounds of potatoes, and seven jumbo size bags of BBQ potato chips. She washes … Continue reading

Post Thanksgiving Turkey Tales

Regular readers of this blog know that I have a thing for eating contests. While I have never personally participated in one, I find myself strangely attracted to the sight of people shoving endless amounts of food into their mouths at high rates of speed. Thanksgiving meals are similar to eating contests only minus the speed. Which is not to say that Turkey Day was minus an eating contest this year. Thanks to the Food Bank of New York City and one major league eater fans of eating contests could get their fill watching Tim Janus devour a Thanksgiving meal … Continue reading

Hot Dog History Made On Independence Day

The Yellow Mustard Belt has returned to the United States on this Fourth of July. In a previous blog I told you about six-time defending hot dog eating champion Takeru Kobayashi’s injured jaw and how his injury may squash any hope of him leaving the 2007 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest as the champ. Well, turns out the Japanese eating king couldn’t shake his arthritic jaw in time and was dethroned this afternoon in Coney Island. In what some are calling hot dog history, American Joey Chestnut shattered the world record by downing a record-breaking 66 dogs in the 12-minute … Continue reading

Chow Time

What is it about watching people shove endless amounts of food into their mouths at high rates of speed that makes crowds go wild? I have a feeling Joey Chestnut may know the answer. The 23-year-old California resident is a professional competitive eater who recently devoured a record 182 chicken wings to win his second consecutive Wing Bowl. The stomach-churning annual event draws thousands of revelers to Philadelphia’s sports complex well before the sun rises. This year Chestnut went up against five other professional eaters and came out on top. So what does one win for chowing down on a … Continue reading
