The Madonna Adoption-Is It Finally A Done Deal?

Several news agencies are confirming that pop singer Madonna and her husband took custody of a motherless 1-year-old boy from Malawi on Thursday. According to news reports, Madonna and husband, Guy Ritchie filed adoption papers and received interim approval from a judge in the impoverished southern African nation.

In an earlier report, the infant's father said he was happy for his son, named David, and was pleased that the celebrity couple wanted to be his parents. The baby's father, Yohame Banda, said he met Madonna and her film director husband Ritchie at the court as part of the formalities.

"They are a lovely couple," Banda told reporters. "She asked me many questions. She and her husband seem happy with David. I am happy for him. Madonna promised me that as the child grows she will bring him back to visit."

This latest report follows days of speculation that the pop star was planning to adopt a youngster from Malawi. However, the singer has not commented publicly since her arrival there on October 4th. What's more, Madonna's publicist has still not confirmed the adoption reports.

But, there's no denying what's written in black and white. According to reporters in Malawi, Judge Andrew Nyirenda gave an interim order that allowed Madonna to take the child to the United States. In addition, Penston Kilimbe, director of child welfare services in the Ministry of Gender, Child Welfare and Community Services, told reporters that Madonna and Ritchie completed all adoption papers before a judge.

"They have followed the normal processes. This has been going on for some time. Now this is the completion point," he said.

According to his father, David's mother died a month after giving birth from medical complications and the child had been cared for at an orphanage in Mchinji, a village near the Zambian border.

So is it a done deal? I suppose we will know for sure when or if we see the Material Girl toting the tot through the airport a la Angelina Jolie... or if she decides to speak to the "rumors" herself. I wonder which will come first?
