Rock of Ages

Ah, apparently you are never too old to rock. Imagine a 92 year old war bride (that is World War II!) singing The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go.” Or, how about a 78-year-old man grooving out to James Brown’s “I Feel Good.” If you are having a hard time conjuring up this picture, fear not – there is a new documentary called Young at Heart that will show you the senior rockers that have been rocking out for some 25 years. The group hails from Northampton, Massachusetts, a small town of 30,000 people. Called the Young@Heart chorus, … Continue reading

The Godfather of Soul – Dead at Age 73

After writing about the death of former Senator Stafford, I am beginning to feel a bit like the grim reaper, but I could not pass the opportunity to write about the passing of The Hardest Working Man in Show Business, James Brown. I read in the news yesterday that Brown had a severe case of pneumonia, but his publicist said he wasn’t in intensive care, so I thought maybe it was something he could recover from, but apparently not. He died early Christmas morning of congestive heart failure as a result of the pneumonia. Brown lived what one comedian called … Continue reading

Finally a Settlement for James Brown’s Estate?

James Brown was known as the Godfather of Soul, Mr. Dynamite, the King of Funk, Soul Brother #1, and the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, but it seems that settling his estate may end up being the hardest working legal battle in show business. (This image, by dbking, is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 License) Brown died on December 25, 2006 of congestive heart failure and complications from pneumonia. Every since then, his estate has been awaiting a settlement. Brown’s will spelled out the dispersion of his music rights, business assets, and real estate. When his attorney Strom … Continue reading

James Brown Auction Raises Mega Money

Despite protests from his children, an auction selling some of James Brown’s prized mementoes raised nearly $900,000. Fans of the legendary singer packed a New York auction house earlier this week to bid on items ranging from Brown’s signature capes to a medical bracelet the Godfather of Soul once wore on stage. According to event organizers, more than 300 of Brown’s belongings were sold, bringing in a total of $857,688. Auction officials say they were shocked at how much people were willing to pay for the late rocker’s personal goods. Bidding reportedly rocketed past estimates for many of the items, … Continue reading

Favorite Movie Villains: Who Didn’t Make the Cut

As you probably know if you have been reading my villain blog series, Entertainment Weekly released their 50 favorite movie villains list. This list was comprised by the EW staff. But, it seems they left off quite a few fan favorites! Fans couldn’t believe EW missed Glenn Close as Marquise Merteuil in Dangerous Liaisons. Personally, I am offended that both EW and fans missed the ultimate female villain, beautiful yet demented Alex Forrest, played by Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. I am sure plenty of us could relate when she told Michael Douglas “I’m not going to be ignored, Dan!” … Continue reading

Turkeys and an Olive Branch

TURKEYS He’s no longer around to personally hand out the holiday birds, but a Thanksgiving tradition the “Godfather of Soul” James Brown started more than a decade ago is still going strong. Brown died of heart failure last Christmas, but today his program, designed to help those less fortunate, kicked off with great success. Brown’s longtime friend and civil rights activist Al Sharpton was on hand in the late singer’s hometown of Augusta, Georgia to hand out the first turkey of the season. The legendary entertainer started giving away free turkeys in 1991 and since then event organizers say more … Continue reading

Gerald Ford Dies

They always say death comes in threes, which really doesn’t make much sense because if you wait long enough, someone else is going to die eventually. This week I had written about the passing of Senator Robert Stafford. Then on Christmas day, soul legend James Brown passed away. Yesterday, I wrote my “In Memorium – 2006” blog for all those we had lost this year. As I pressed the button to save the blog, I thought to myself “Well, we do still have a few more days in the year – what if someone else dies?” But I convinced myself … Continue reading
