Gwen’s Name Choice Explained and a Poltergeist Remake?

The odd baby name is finally explained! Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale welcomed their second son this week – Zuma Nesta Rock – and I wondered where the name came from. Baby name expert (I never knew there was such a thing!) Pamela Redmond Satran explained it all yesterday to US magazine. She believes the name Zuma came from Zuma Beach in Malibu. It seems that earlier in his career, Rossdale said he was standing on the beach in the early morning when he made a life changing decision. He had been working all night as a production assistant on … Continue reading

Writer Dominick Dunne Dead at 83

While the country is still recovering from the death of the Lion of the Senate, Ted Kennedy, another celebrity died without much fanfare. Writer Dominick Dunne passed away yesterday at the age of 83 from bladder cancer. Dunne was cited on CNN as a “celebrity crime writer,” but he actually didn’t start crime writing until after a personal tragedy occurred. Dunne worked as a movie producer in Hollywood in the ‘60s, but addiction to alcohol and drugs caused him to flee the town. Once he got sober, he wrote the best seller “The Two Mrs. Grenvilles” and followed that success … Continue reading

Dominick Dunne Rushed from the O.J. Trial

In case you missed it in the news, O.J. Simpson is back in court, this time for reportedly robbing memorabilia collectors at gunpoint in Las Vegas. O.J. has been charged with criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, assault, robbery, use of a deadly weapon, and just generally being a despicable human being. Okay, I embellished a bit on that last charge. (Photo by Gerald Johnson, a U.S. military or Department of Defense employee and taken during official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain.) Anyhow, as might be expected, this O.J. Simpson trial is … Continue reading

Movie Milestones – 25th Anniversaries

It is the twenty fifth anniversary of many famous films from 1982. I was but a youngster then (19) and going to the movies was one of my favorite activities (still is!). E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial It is hard to believe it has been twenty-five years since Drew Barrymore graced the big screen as the adorable Gertie. It was the highest grossing movie that year and won three of the nine Oscars for which it was nominated. E.T. also won two Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture and Best Original Score for a Motion Picture. Director Steven Spielberg says that E.T. … Continue reading

My Top Ten Horror Movie List

It’s that time of the year – Halloween is upon us and if you like scary movies, it may be time to dig them out for your DVD player. I hated scary movies growing up. In fact, after seeing Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds I refused to watch anything remotely horror based for 10 years. And only then, did I watch one movie (see #10) because my mom was watching it. My next horror movie didn’t come until I was 17 and went to see The Fog. But, sometime during my college years, my love for horror movies kicked in. My … Continue reading
