Auction Items Go For Big Bucks

Throughout the year, Michele and I have both blogged about several celebrity auctions. It just amazes me that people love to purchase things celebrities have owned. It does not seem to matter if it is a car, clothing, or something as simple as an ink pen, if someone popular enough owned it, chances are, someone out there wants to buy it! The newest big auction ticket item was the little black dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the 1961 hit Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In case you have not noticed, Audrey Hepburn, like Chanel suits, never seems to go out of style. … Continue reading

Steve McQueen Auction: Cool for Sale

Steve McQueen was and always will be the King of Cool. Even 26 years after his death (due to mesothelioma), he is still a pop culture icon. Almost as well known for his love of racing as his acting, Sheryl Crow paid homage to him in her song titled “Steve McQueen” – “Like Steve McQueen, All I need’s a fast machine.” Unfortunately, it was this love of racing that might have contributed to his premature death as he wore asbestos-insulated suits in the racecars. This past Saturday, November 11th, the famous Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles was the site … Continue reading

Canada and Asbestos

I don’t know about you, but I often take buildings for granted. I assume they are built with certain standards that will insure not only my safety, but that of the people who built them. However, this is not the case all around the world. The Canadian government recently said it will start a billion dollar project to rid its parliamentary buildings of asbestos. After all, most of us know asbestos is bad. The small fibers can be inhaled and exposure to these fibers can cause mesothelioma, a type of cancer that generally offers a limited life expectancy. Notable people … Continue reading

Actors that Turned Down Iconic Roles – Part Two

Last blog, I was talking about how actors turned down iconic film roles, for whatever reason – it just didn’t interest them, they had a previous commitment, etc. Here are a few more people that turned down very important roles: Sean Connery as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings? Oh sure, Connery has made his mark in cinema, but he turned down the role of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, saying he “didn’t understand the script.” Too bad for Connery – he was offered up to 15% of the box office receipts by New Cinema, which could … Continue reading

Biker Babes Unite

Did you know the fastest growing segment of motorcycle owners in the country wears skirts? I live in Harley country so seeing women on the back of souped up hogs is nothing out of the ordinary. But for others watching dozens of biker babes—driving—not riding on the back of motorcycles is quite a sight. (At least it was for my mother who was born and raised in Hawaii.) If you think the experience was unique for my mother think about how the chicks on those bikes must feel. Twenty years ago 90% of motorcycle owners were men. These days motorcycle … Continue reading

Charles Nelson Reilly: 1931 – 2007

Charles Nelson Reilly died yesterday of complications due to pneumonia at the age of 76. I was sad to read this today, as Charles Nelson Reilly was a part of my childhood. When I was younger, I was addicted to game shows. Well, nothing has really changed much, I still love games shows, but back in the 70s, many of them seemed so adult and edgy. One of my favorites, of course, was “Match Game.” Gene Rayburn was the host and there were several celebrity panelists that regularly appeared on the show. Charles Nelson Reilly always held court along with … Continue reading

Catching Up with Nicolas Cage

The other night, I was trying to decide what to watch on late night television. I do not normally watch David Letterman or Jay Leno unless there is just someone I love appearing as a guest. Fortunately, for me, Nicolas Cage was on “Late Night with David Letterman” earlier this week. I just had to watch, but it was a different interview. Cage’s new movie, Next, has him playing a character who can see two minutes into the future. Nicolas said that while he could not do that in real life, he was able to hold his breath for two … Continue reading

The celebrity news you may have missed! 10. Jessica Biel Dating Derek Jeter? There are reports circulating that actress Jessica Biel is dating Yankee Derek Jeter after the two were seen together at Hyde in Los Angeles. Beautiful, rich, famous, dating Derek…just gives me another reason to hate her – LOL! 9. “Lord of the Dance” Flatley Taken Ill I am surprised I haven’t read too much about this, but the Internet Movie Database has reported twice this week that Michael Flatley is suffering from a serious immune virus and has been in the hospital for the past two weeks. … Continue reading
