Mr. Reading Rainbow’s Radical Message to Parents

Oh no, he didn’t. Levar Burton, host of the now canceled PBS children’s series “Reading Rainbow,” didn’t just tell legions of parents: “I couldn’t care less whether kids learn to read.” Oh yes, he did. But, that’s not all the 26-year veteran of the popular kid’s show got off his chest during a recent public statement. Burton also told his loyal fans (or at least the ones who can read): “May that godforsaken show burn in hell.” That was before the former “Roots” star let this doozy rip: “Look, Reading Rainbow was a television program. That should tell you something … Continue reading

Top Earning Country Music Acts

Forbes is at it again and it seems as if there is quite a bit of money to be made in country music. Forbes released its Top Earning Country Music Stars list and believe it or not, only one is a woman. Coming in at #9 (there is a tie for #7) is a pseudo-old timer – Alan Jackson. Last year, Jackson earned $10 million dollars, due in part to his tour with Brooks & Dunn. Don’t worry, we will see them later on in the list. George Strait, another old timer (well, compared to the rest on the list), … Continue reading

Help Your Eyes Adjust to Bifocals

The day may come when the eye doctor switches you from regular glasses to bifocals (or trifocals) — especially if you have trouble seeing close up and things that are far away. For someone used to single-prescription glasses, the switch to bifocals can be disorienting. Eye doctors say that it may take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to get used to multifocal lenses. You may need to re-visit the optometrist for adjustments — you’re dealing with two separate prescriptions living in one glasses frame. The measurements need to be more precise than traditional single-focus glasses. Here … Continue reading

Do You Read to Your Children?

If so, do you make the experience fun and exciting or do you act as though you’d rather be getting your wisdom teeth yanked out—-without anesthesia. If there is one thing a parent shouldn’t have to be told to do with their child it’s read. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who would not agree that reading to kids is one of the most important things you can do for them during their formative years. Not only does reading aloud to your kids help them develop critical language skills, it also strengthens the bond behind parent and child. … Continue reading

Celebrity Hookups: Country Crooner, TV Doc and Major Movie Star

Did you hear the one about the gorgeous country music singer, who gets dumped by her pro football player boyfriend, then hooks up with a real-life doctor, who shot to fame on a reality TV show and is now starring in a syndicated talk show? It’s a classic Hollywood hook-up. Several news outlets are reporting that “American Idol” champ Carrie Underwood has moved on from her failed relationship with Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo (Jessica Simpson’s current beau) and is dating doctor and television personality Travis Stork. The 25-year-old singer has reportedly been seeing the 36-year-old former “Bachelor” star for … Continue reading

“Sesame Street” Helping Parents Teach Kids About Terrorism

Subtitle: Elmo Meets Michael Chertoff or “The Muppets Take Manhattan… Post 9/11” I wish I were kidding. For decades parents have turned to those fun-loving furry friends on “Sesame Street” when they needed help teaching their kids how to spell, tie their shoes, and count to 10 in Spanish. But now Elmo, Grover, Big Bird, Zoe, Oscar the Grouch and crew are getting serious about a grown up topic most adults struggle to deal with—terrorism and other potential deadly catastrophes. So how exactly does a parent explain to a 3-year-old why it’s important to prepare for a terrorist attack? Don’t … Continue reading

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Of the 6,000 fans that gathered outside a Chicago church last week to bid farewell to actor Bernie Mac more than half wondered why his publicist continually fed false health updates to the media during his hospitalization. The comedian’s rep is remaining mum, but Mac’s widow recently went public with her reaction to her beloved husband’s death. Just a few days ago Mac’s wife of 30 years spoke to reporters and admitted that initially she didn’t think much of her late husband’s trip to the hospital. As she tells it, the comedian had a fever and trouble breathing, but didn’t … Continue reading

James Garner Suffers a Minor Stroke

Actor James Garner has suffered a minor stroke. The 80-year-old actor was hospitalized last week, but his publicist say he is doing well and should be returning home soon. The actor went into a Los Angeles hospital Friday after falling ill at his home. Publicist Jennifer Allen told the Associated Press “he’s still in the hospital but my understanding is he is doing well and will be going home soon. When, exactly, we have not been told yet.” Garner got his big break in show business when he landed the role of Bret Maverick in the comedy Western show “Maverick” … Continue reading

Music Musings

The Bee Gees are returning to the stage… though it’s not the concert stage. The award-winning singing group is taking its act to Broadway and London’s West End. On Saturday Robin Gibb announced that a theatre musical based on the disco trio’s greatest hits, including “Stayin’ Alive” and “Jive Talkin’” is currently in the works. According to Gibb, the project should open to the public in the next 12-16 months. In the meantime, another popular singer is making her debut on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. Carrie Underwood joined the cast of the long-running country music show Saturday … Continue reading

Chace and JC’s Bo-mance

It’s a BO-mance people, not a RO-mance. That’s the emphatic cry of actor Chace Crawford and former ‘N Sync star JC Chasez. The Hollywood hotties say they are sick of fending off rumors that they are more than “just friends.” The Internet buzz brewing over a possible romance between Crawford and Chasez appears to be wearing on the pair. Addressing the rumor yet again an agigated Chasez recently told PEOPLE magazine: “You know what, it’s laughable the first time, but I think the tenth time, it gets annoying.” As for WB star Crawford his recent split from Carrie Underwood hasn’t … Continue reading
