Keeping House While Working From Home

If you work from home, people may have this strange idea that you have oodles of spare time that you could use to keep your house looking immaculate. While that may be true for some home – based professionals, most of the ones that I know are either very busy looking after their children while running their businesses or very busy with their businesses if they don’t have kids or have older children. We probably have approximately the same amount of time available for house cleaning that anyone else does. That said, when you work from home a clean house … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning the Kitchen – Part 4

It’s time to do some spring cleaning in the kitchen. Start off by removing as many items as you can, including those things you keep on your countertops. Take out the table, chairs, microwave and so on. The more you are able to remove from the room, the easier your cleaning will be. Dust the ceiling and corners of the walls. Spot wash walls, doorknobs, outside of cabinets, switch plates, vents, etc. If you are dealing with grease or grime—especially around your stove—you may need a special cleaner. Dust or use a slightly damp cloth to clean wall hangings. Dust … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning the Bathroom – Part 3

Do you feel that spring cleaning is in the air? This is the perfect time of the year to deep clean and organize those rooms. And today we are going to be focusing on the bathroom. Without maintaining the bathroom, it can quickly fall into bad shape. Depending on how badly your bathroom needs it, you may need to do a thorough scrub down. My advice is to start with the decluttering, with the most likely culprit to be the medicine cabinet. This is a great opportunity to go through and throw out expired or unused medicines. Be sure to … Continue reading

Staying Healthy During the Holidays

Tis the season, for coughing, sneezing, runny noses, tummy aches and any other kind of germ your kids can drag home. It’s no fun to be sick for the holidays but in my house it seems like someone always is. Maybe it’s because we are spending more time in crowded shopping centers and malls, maybe it’s because we are exposed to more germs at all the holiday parties we attend or maybe germs just like us better during the holidays. Whatever the reason, we need to do what we can to fend off illness so everyone can enjoy the holidays. … Continue reading

Preparing for Company

We are down to the wire, our houses need to be clean for company. When I’m having company over I always stress about the house, I want it to look nice and I want people to be comfortable in my home. I love having a houseful of people for the holidays. Big dinners, Christmas parties, I love those things. There is nothing better than being surrounded by the people you love. In order to have everyone here and feel good about it, my house needs to be clean. I have so much cooking and baking to do that I don’t … Continue reading

Keeping Holiday Food Warm

My husband has been on a mission for more than year: to find the perfect chafing dish or other means to keep food warm for family get togethers, church functions and other celebrations. Chafing dishes, or should I say, the perfect chafing dishes, are hard to find. We have looked at a number of them and they have all failed the test, according to my husband. He has something particular in mind. Since we are chafing dish-less, I have found a number of other ways to keep the holiday food warm. When traveling with a meal, there are a number … Continue reading

Pet Care And Housekeeping

Housekeeping is about more than just dusting and vacuuming. The majority of housework is preventative. Little things like not allowing food and drinks out of the kitchen, trash cans readily available in bathrooms and children’s rooms, easy ways to sort laundry. Doing little things to prevent messes can help lessen the time we spend cleaning them up. One area that will reduce a lot of cleanup time is pet care. Pets contribute greatly to a family in so many ways, including extra housework. Take time to do some preventative work and your pet housekeeping responsibilities will be minimal. If you … Continue reading

A Sure Sigh of Spring

Sigh! Make that siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh! Spring has sprung in our neck of the woods, but instead of ushering in gentle breezes, colorful blossoms and the sweet sound of chirping cardinals, I’m dealing with high temperatures and a cacophony of coughs. My kid has spring fever. Literally. I blame Mother Nature. For starters my daughter suffers from allergies. Environmental stimulants, such as pollen and ragweed result in itchy, watery eyes, a running nose, and non-stop sneezing. On top of that, she’s done with school. And by done I mean her ability to concentrate on schoolwork is nil since the mercury has hit … Continue reading

Keeping House When Life is Busy

You know you are busy when you forget to eat. I come from a long line of Italians. Eating is ranked just below breathing. Someone is considered too skinny and near death if their pants size falls below two digits. So you can see that things have come to extremes in our household. My husband has a full time job with several important projects. He is also working on finishing our basement work as a freelancer and have taken on many extra hours in the last two month, partially from the needs of my clients and partially from our goal … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning: Electronics

Some people believe it is a cardinal sin to clean CDs and DVDs with Windex. Meanwhile, others brag that they use the popular glass cleaner all the time to remove smudges and fingerprints from their favorite discs. So what gives? It is really safe to use commercial glass cleaners on delicate discs? According to experts, Windex is not the recommended cleaner of choice for discs, neither is hydrogen peroxide. Apparently, both products have abrasive qualities that can damage CDs and DVDs. The same is true for baking soda, metal cleaners and other all-purpose cleaners, such as Pledge Multi Surface Spray. … Continue reading
