Potter’s Glasses Honor Holocaust Victims

Just file it under: the most unique way to reuse eyeglasses. Daniel Radcliffe, the young actor who played the bespectacled schoolboy wizard in the “Harry Potter” films, may never look at his first eyeglasses in the same way again. The 18-year-old just donated the glasses he wore as a child to a one-of-a-kind exhibition marking the horrors of the Holocaust. Radcliffe donated the tiny oval, gray metal-framed pair of glasses he wore as a 6-year-old to the exhibit where it joins specs belonging to Yoko Ono, talk show host Jerry Springer, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and other celebrities. … Continue reading

Should Your Child’s Body Mass Index (BMI) Be Included On Their Report Card?

Should your child’s Body Mass Index (BMI) be included on their report card? According to the current issue of Redbook, several states have elected to include BMI’s on students’ report card in an effort to fight the rising childhood obesity epidemic. Your BMI is the ratio of weight to height and is used to determine a person’s healthy weight. I’m usually pretty much for or against an issue like this but I have to say this is one time I’m sort of riding the fence. I can understand both sides of the issue and could be persuaded to go either … Continue reading

Shaq Files For Divorce

Was it all about the Benjamins? Whatever the reason Shaquille O’Neal has decided his marriage to wife Shaunie is “irretrievably broken.” According to court documents, the basketball star filed for divorce from his wife in Miami yesterday after nearly five years of marriage and four children together. The Miami Herald is reporting that the couple has a prenuptial agreement. What’s more, the newspaper reveals that a clue to the break up may be contained in the court documents. The End Of An Era—A Sad Day For Cereal Lovers

Do you have any idea how many meals I have shared with Toucan Sam and Dig ‘Em Frog? The popular cereal characters are as much a part of pop culture as the hula-hoop and Monopoly… and now (sniff, sniff) they are being (cough) phased (wheeze) out. Sad, but true. According to the Kellogg Company they will stop using the characters to promote products “unless they meet guidelines concerning calories, sugar, fat and sodium.” In other words the characters will be axed from advertising campaigns if it is found that the cereal is marketed to kids and does not meet specific … Continue reading

Childhood Obesity Linked to Gender In Sweden

A new Swedish study has linked childhood obesity, in that country, with gender. According to research conducted at Sweden’s Uppsala University, 4-year-old girls were six times as likely to be obese than they were 20 years ago. The researchers have concluded that recent lifestyle chances are the cause for much of the obesity they are currently seeing. However, they added, “It is difficult to say what that is.” The findings, published April’s issue of Acta Paeditrica, show that in 1982, 1% of all 4-year-olds were obese. By 2002, 2% of boys and 6% of girls were considered obese. The differences … Continue reading

Perhaps, Ruben Studdard was too busy… ABC is hoping for a slam-dunk when it airs a new reality TV series starring NBA All-Star Shaquille O’Neal aiding overweight children. The series, which will run during the summer months, will feature the Miami Heat star and his effort to help Florida schoolchildren lose weight. Show producers say the series is currently being filmed in Broward County, Florida and tracks the lives of the children involved. O’Neal will reportedly be on hand to support the children and (in episodes yet … Continue reading
