Green Musicians: Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam

You might not think of a Seattle grunge band as being politically and socially conscious, but Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam would prove you wrong. In fact, the band even has a section titled “Activism” in their official home page. The band, many times through spokesman Vedder, has always been vocal on certain subjects and promoted their favorite causes. The band has supported awareness of Crohn’s Disease, in part because lead guitarist Mike McCready suffers from it. They have fought against Ticketmaster for what they see as a monopolization of concert venues. They also try to follow a carbon neutral … Continue reading

The Death of a Rock-n-Roll Icon

I have always heard all good things must come to an end. But this one really hurts. I read today that famed New York club CBGB will officially be closing in October 2006. The club’s lease expired and unable or unwilling to pay the rent increase from $19,000 to $35,000 a month, owner Hilly Kristal was eventually presented with an eviction notice. The music industry rallied around finding a solution to keep CBGB open, but after much hubbub between Hilly and the property owner, it looks like the legendary club will close for good, at least at its original site. … Continue reading

Stranger Things Have Happened

I live in Wisconsin so technically I should be a Brewers fan who sends bad wishes in the direction of Chicago and their world famous Cubs. The problem is I love Eddie Vedder and the Pearl Jam font man has just released a song for the Chicago baseball team that I find intoxicating. The new tune (which was created at the request of Cubs great Ernie Banks) is called “All the Way.” The song is available on Pearl Jam’s Web site right now, but you can hear it being played almost non-stop on Chicago radio stations and in bars near … Continue reading

Music News: It’s All About The Digits

Do you remember Tommy Tutone’s 1982 hit single that made the phone number 867-5309 famous? The song used the digits over and over in its catchy refrain and skyrocketed to the top of the pop music charts. Well, now the song is the subject of a bitter battle between two businesses. According to news reports, a Rhode Island company and a national firm are battling over the right to use the number. The fight reportedly began two years ago, when Gem Plumbing & Heating of Lincoln, Rhode Island trademarked the popular phone number after Tutone’s song reached No. 4 on … Continue reading

Bob Geldolf vs. Al Gore

In this corner: Bob Geldolf, former front-man of The Boomtown Rats and the man who organized the Live Aid and Live 8 benefit concerts. And in this corner: former vice-president and resident greenie Al Gore. Both ready to do battle. Ding. Ding. Gore probably outweighs Geldolf by the equivalent of a dozen Sanjaya Malakars, but Geldolf is the one who has been getting in the most jabs. Most recently Geldolf has come out swinging at the politician-turned environmental activist, criticizing the Live Earth music events Gore is putting together this summer, saying they lack a specific goal. In a previous … Continue reading
