The Tears of a Clown: Robin Williams Enters Rehab for Alcoholism

There are two stars that I almost feel like I have grown up with – John Travolta and Robin Williams. Both were young stars when I was a teen and have grown into very established stars. I have followed the career of both and have seen them go from underappreciated to well respected actors. As far as comedy goes, there is – at least in my mind – no comic greater at improve than Robin Williams. In fact, he may be the best – ever. It was announced this week that Robin Williams decided to enter rehab for alcoholism. His … Continue reading

Dr. Phil Smells Fresh Meat and Her Name is Britney Spears

Quick… name the one person you would have least expected to show up at Britney Spears’s hospital room to offer psychological aid to the embattled songstress. Okay, besides Robin Williams. If you answered Dr. Phil McGraw go out and buy yourself a lottery ticket. Dr. Phil… Britney Spears… could the insanity meter gauging this drama peak any more? You’ve got a 26-year-old head shaving, bird flipping, finger lickin’ mother of two young sons who appears to have serious psychological problems and you throw an oversized, over-hyped, TV quack into the mix… Apocalypse now. And the sad part is that Dr. … Continue reading

Do You Have a License to Wed?

Let me preface this blog with the advice that this movie is a waste of time. I went to see it with my husband and my mother in law and what looked like a mildly amusing romp in previews was actually a guide for all the things you shouldn’t do when getting ready to get married. First and foremost, the preface of the movie is that the boy meets girl, boy and girl date, boy and girl fall in love and move in together – boy proposes and girl wants to get married at her family church with the reverend … Continue reading

Friday Fitness Funnies: Laughter Does a Brain Good

I like to go and look up Fitness funnies every Friday and I try to populate this blog with humorous stories now and then. As it turns out, my reasoning was that humor does a body good, but what humor does the mind good. There are plenty of physicians still debating the merits of humor, but did you know that there is an American Association of Therapeutic Humor? I didn’t. Though I have to admit, the idea that there are physicians and associations out there who take in serious note the fact that humor can be a healing tool brings … Continue reading

Comic Relief Returns

If you have been missing Comic Relief, you will be glad to know it is returning! The three original comedian hosts – Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robin Williams – will return on November 18th to resurrect their fundraising comedy concert. This is the first time in almost eight years the three have gotten together and this time, the money will go to victims of Hurricane Katrina, including both humans and the animals displaced because of the storm. Due to many factors including lack of housing and jobs, a year after the storm, the New Orleans population is estimated to … Continue reading

Billy Crystal: Long Island’s Own Funny Man

Billy Crystal was born on March 14, 1947, in Long Beach, Long Island, the youngest of three sons of Jack and Helen Crystal. His father was a well-known concert promoter who founded Commodore Records and his mother was a homemaker. As a child, he was exposed to the top performers of the day, notably Billy Holiday, Pee Wee Russell and Eddie Condon who visited the Crystal household often. When he was fifteen years of age, his father died of a heart attack at the age of 54. This greatly instilled in him a sense of appreciation for both his father’s … Continue reading
