Weddings And Kinship Terms Part 1 – There Are No Cousins In Law

Last week, my sister got married. It was an incredible event, complete with a sunset cruise on a beautiful schooner. I am very happy for my sister and her husband, and I really enjoyed visiting with them and meeting his family for the first time. As is the case with any wedding, the uniting of two families brings about family history related discussion aplenty. One discussion that I remember has to do with kinship terms, more specifically how the two totally adorable ring bearers are now related as a result of the wedding. One of the ring bearers is my … Continue reading

Organizing Your Clothes Closet

In general, closets are not my specialty around here. In fact, almost all of them are cluttered and disorganized…or they are at leastheading in that direction. But for whatever reason, the one closet I have always managed to keep together is my clothes closet. You might think I have some great ideas or you might think I’m a little over the top…you be the judge. First, it helps to have a large closet. If you don’t, then utilize your space well. Since the weather is cooler, it’s probably time to pack away the summer clothes. This will leave more room … Continue reading

Massachusetts Residents Are About to Receive Rebates

If you are a resident of Massachusetts, and you have health insurance coverage, you might be getting an insurance rebate soon! This is thanks to the Affordable Care Act that requires health insurance companies to spend at least 80% of the money they get from premiums on actual health care for their customers. Insurers who failed to do that have to send out rebates. The medical loss ratio, or MLR, is a regulation that is part of the Affordable Care Act. It went into effect in 2011. The purpose of the law was to prevent insurance companies from spending the … Continue reading

The Deadline For State Exchanges Has Been Set

There is a very important deadline coming up. States have until November 16, 2012, to submit proposals that show how they intend to operate their health insurance exchanges. The exchanges are expected to be ready to go in 2014. Part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, (or ACA, or “Obamacare”), requires each state to create its own health insurance exchange. These exchanges are supposed to make it possible for Americans to find affordable health insurance plans. People who are uninsured can use the exchanges to find a health plan. People who already have health insurance can use the … Continue reading

Ready for the Carefree Days of Summer

I am counting down the days…three and a half more of school. And then this school year is officially over with. Sometimes I wonder if I get more excited about the end of school than my children. There are so many things I won’t miss for the next three months. Take last Friday. I spent 20 minutes trying to wake up one of my children. When we were finally down to the wire, my voice was now in stereo and it was no more Mr. Nice Guy. So that child put everyone else behind in getting ready. I had a … Continue reading

Ready, Set, Relax!

As single parents it’s no secret that we are sleep-deprived about 90% of the time. Ok, let’s face it; it’s more like 99.9% for some of us. Kids drain all of the energy right out of you! When you’re doing it alone, I think they drain it twice as fast. Instead of daydreaming about unicorns and rainbows, all you can think about is the moment your head finally gets to hit the pillow at night. In fact research shows that if you have at least one child under the age of 5 you are facing something known as a daytime … Continue reading

Newlywed Gift

Do you know a newly married couple just setting up housekeeping? Still looking for the perfect gift? How about a cleaning basket? The new couple will get plenty of towels, coasters, sheets, glasses and toasters so give them something they will really use. I remember when I moved into my first apartment, cleaning supplies seemed so expensive and no matter what I bought I still needed more, not to mention I needed it most when I could afford it least. It’s not a very romantic gift but it is one they will use, over and over again. You can make … Continue reading

Researching Your Ancestors’ Weddings

The recent Royal wedding was just the first of many weddings that will take place this wedding season. Spring and summer are popular times to get married, and chances are that you may be invited to attend one or more weddings for friends and family this year. Of course I must add that around here, wedding season stretches into autumn because the natural beauty of our fall foliage along with mostly pleasant weather creates a breathtaking setting for outdoor weddings. If you are your family’s genealogy expert, you may already be focusing on adding the details of upcoming nuptials to … Continue reading

Selecting the Flowers for Your Wedding

Earlier, we talked about choosing the size of your wedding bouquet. Now it’s time to break the whole flower thing down to the finer basics – what kinds of flowers do you want? There are a number of different variables to go into the equation. Let’s take a look at them. 1. What time of year are you getting married? If you’re working with a florist, you can be almost sure of getting the flowers you want, regardless of season, because florist flowers are grown in greenhouses. However, there are some things, such as waxflower, which are only available during … Continue reading

Let’s Get Ready For School

My 4-year-old has been in preschool for four months now, yet we still seem to have the same battle every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when getting her ready for school. The stalling. The playing. The distraction. She can’t seem to focus on getting ready for school. I’ll have to admit that we probably all take a little too long to get going in the morning. So, that doesn’t help. I’ve managed to implement some rules like no TV until she is all ready for school. She has gotten used to that. But, we still fall into the same patterns of … Continue reading
