Watch Out for the “Up to” Sales

“All Toys on Sale up to 50 percent off!” “Save up to 70 percent off on all clearance sweaters!” “Going Out of Business! All books are up to 90 percent off!” These are some of the most recent sale signs that I have seen on store windows this holiday season. Are the desperate retail stores trying to unload as much as they can before Christmas, giving you the rock bottom deals while they still can? Well, yes and no. There is truth in advertising and then there is truth in advertising. The “up to” sales work well for the stores. … Continue reading

Baby’s First Snow Adventure

This past weekend, we got a monster snow storm. My kids were all excited to go play in the snow. It just kept falling, and there was plenty of snow right in our backyard to build a snowman and even a little sledding hill. While I love looking at the snow from my warm house, sometimes, the thought of getting the kids all bundled up seems exhausting, and I leave it up to my husband. But, this time, I was anxious to get the baby out in the snow and let him experience his first snowfall since last year he … Continue reading

Getting Road Trip Ready

I just realized today that in just a couple of weeks, my husband, the boys, my parents, and I are going to embark on the biggest adventure that we as a family have ever had. In the past, I have pretty much been a seat of the pants type of girl when it comes to travel. I am not sure if that is such a wise approach to take on a road trip from Vermont to Florida that involves four adults and two kids, so I am beginning to do a little bit of planning. There once was a time … Continue reading

Helping Your Toddler Become A Problem Solver

Did you know that one of the best tools that you can give your toddler is the ability to solve problems for himself or herself? It can be frustrating to watch your little boy or girl struggle with something like getting his or her shirt on, or finding the right place for the puzzle piece to fit in. Many of us are quick to rush to the rescue, to help our little one “get it right” either to ease his frustration, or to get her out the door in time. If we are able to step back a little bit … Continue reading

Mama’s Got The Bedtime Blues

Many parents of toddlers have trouble with bedtime. Bedtime battles come and go throughout toddlerhood, and it can be the most trying time of day. By a certain time in the evening, you are ready for your toddler to go to bed – especially if he or she did not take a nap earlier in the day. Dylan has been pretty good about bedtime for the last month or so. I start to set the stage for bedtime by having dinner on the table by seven each night – or as close to seven as possible. If Dylan did not … Continue reading

Housekeeping Then and Now

I was recently watching a show depicted in the times before we had electricity. It was interesting to think about how different housekeeping was back then. In order to get the most out of your day, you had to get up with the sun. That meant rising pretty early. And the work didn’t end until the sun went down. I was thinking about how even back then, women kept a schedule. They knew when their day would begin and when it would end. They scheduled their housekeeping according to the different seasons. But they also set aside certain tasks on … Continue reading

Once Upon a Time Recap: A Deadly Disease

Sunday nights are quickly becoming my favorite night for television. My husband and I eagerly rush the kids off to bed before 8pm and then settle down to watch first Once Upon a Time and then Downton Abbey. We load the dishwasher and pick up stray socks during commercials and give each other recaps if one of use doesn’t get back to the screen in time. In my opinion, Once Upon a Time just keeps getting better. Last night’s episode featured an upcoming wedding, a mysterious stranger in town (I have my own theory) and a deadly disease, otherwise known … Continue reading

Don’t Get Me Anything!

For Christmas, my husband and I bought a gift card for my brother. Yesterday, my brother called me and was extremely upset because the gift card did not work. He has Asperger’s Syndrome, and this unexpected problem was more than he could handle. My brother is an adult, but he still lives with our parents. I think my brother might still have a job, but I am not entirely certain of that. He is brilliant, but, due to his Asperger’s Syndrome, does still need someone to watch over him from time to time. Yesterday, I got a phone call from … Continue reading

Most Frightening Disney Moments

In honor of my favorite holiday I’m going to look at the scariest moments in Disney movies. I’m not as well-versed in all of their live action flicks, so I’ll limit my focus to the animated features. The first movie that immediately popped into my head was “Pinocchio.” Believe it or not, it wasn’t the mammoth Monstro that most frightened me. It was anything to do with Pleasure Island, particularly the donkey transformations. Even at my young age I sensed something sinister about the crowds of boys pushing and scrabbling at one another to get at the attractions on Pleasure … Continue reading

Spending Time With My Sister Part V

On the fourth day of our visit, we had early morning plans. I made breakfast while my sister nursed the baby and my son asked to hold the baby repeatedly. After a breakfast of an egg omelet and an orange, we got the kids ready for our early morning outing. First, stop of the morning was my sister’s chiropractic adjustment. The baby was also getting an adjustment. While, they were at their appointment, my son and I went to the convenient store across the street to buy more diapers for my son. We then returned to the chiropractor’s office just … Continue reading
