The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

I’ve heard a lot about “The Pursuit of Happyness” but just got around to watching it the other night. Now I can’t figure out why I waited so long. Will Smith stars as Chris Gardner, a man with a young family comprised of his wife Linda (Thandie Newton) and his son Chris (played by Will’s own son, Jaden Smith). Chris works selling bone density scanners – he sunk his entire life savings into buying several of the units, and must hit the sidewalks to find doctors interested in buying the units. Linda works double shifts at a restaurant while Little … Continue reading

Random Acts of Kindness—Spreading “Happyness”

It may have been released several weeks ago, but Hollywood’s still buzzing about the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness.” The film tells the real-life story of a homeless man (played by Will Smith) who worked his way to becoming a millionaire. At the rate my life speeds by I’ll never get a chance to see the movie in a theater (I’ll likely catch it on DVD), but the same is not true for dozens of infrequent moviegoers in Washington, D.C. Recently, about 100 of D.C.’s homeless people were guests of the mayor’s office for a screening of “The Pursuit of … Continue reading

So That’s Where Their Money is Going

If you took a break from reading the tabloids this weekend you might have missed the latest rumor: Justin Timberlake is prepping to pop the question to girlfriend Jessica Biel. The 27-year-old “SexyBack” singer is rumored to be on the verge of asking his 26-year-old actress gal pal to marry him, after a yearlong courtship. According to the British newspaper The Sun, “Justin realizes he is not getting any younger and is thinking about marriage and kids. For the first time in his life he is feeling settled and has definitely decided to pop the question to Jessica.” We’ll just … Continue reading

Will Smith’s Hitler Comment Brouhaha

Where would the Anti-Defamation League without celebrities making remarks that can be twisted into controversy? While the rest of us spent the last few days putting the finishing touches on holiday baking, gift buying, and attending family functions, actor Will Smith was trying to convince the Anti-Defamation League that a quote used by a Scottish newspaper was nothing more than a statement taken out of context. The rapper turned actor was quoted in the Daily Record as saying, “Even Hitler didn’t wake up going, ‘Let me do the most evil thing I can do today.’ I think he woke up … Continue reading

The Dog in I Am Legend

“I was begging him,” Will said. “I was like, ‘Please let me have Abbey. Please, please, please let me have her.’ But you know, she has her own family now so it was just another one of those fleeting Hollywood romances. ~-From an Access Hollywood interview-~ As I wrote about in Animal Movies = Torture: How I Fared Through Evan Almighty, movies featuring animals kill me. Doesn’t matter if there’s a happy ending or not, I can’t sit still to watch them. This weekend Wayne and I went to see I Am Legend. I knew there was a dog in … Continue reading

I am Thankful That I Can Afford to Be Frugal

The other night, I watched an amazing, and touching movie called, “The Pursuit of Happyness” that made me put “frugality” into perspective. Three years ago I was making a fairly good income as a social worker. When my daughter was born, I quit my job to stay home with her. I joined two home-based direct sales companies and earned a surprisingly comfortable income with both. Suddenly, I realized I was still working full time (from home) and my kids weren’t getting the attention I’d intended to give them. So I quit again. Now, I am broke, but happy. Every so … Continue reading

This Year’s Academy Awards

This Sunday is the 79th Annual Academy Awards. This year’s host will be Ellen Degeneres. I like Ellen – I think she is funny. I never cared to watch her talk show because I like her more as a stand up comedian, but I think she should fit in well as host. This is her first appearance as an Oscar host. As I started searching Families.com, I realized we had tons of blogs on Oscar’s previous hosts, previous winners, and this year’s nominees. Check some of these out: Blogs about former Oscar hosts: Chris Rock Chris Rock: Brooklyn’s Own Stand-Up … Continue reading
