Insurance Blog Week in Review – Week of March 12 – 17, 2012

The Insurance Blog will get anywhere between twelve and fourteen different blogs added to it each week. It can be hard to keep up with them all. The Insurance Blog Week in Review is a great way to “ketchup” on whatever you missed. This week has a lot about my own, personal, attempts to find affordable health insurance. ABS Insurance has Tips for St. Patrick’s Day ABS has a few tips that can help you avoid having to make a car insurance claim on St. Patrick’s Day. Their advice would be helpful for pretty much any holiday that includes a … Continue reading

Parents in Denial: Pool Pregnancy

You know you are a parent in denial when… You insist that your 13-year-old daughter got pregnant from swimming in a hotel pool—-ALONE! No parent wants to think that his or her child is anything less than perfect, but Magdalena Kwiatkowska may want to consider taking off the blinders for a split second before proceeding with her recently filed bizarre lawsuit. Kwiatkowska says she was forced to hire a lawyer upon returning with her daughter from a lavish holiday at an upscale hotel in Egypt. Apparently, the family returned home with more than a few shiny trinkets from the souvenir … Continue reading

Madonna’s Adoption DENIED!

I guess money and fame can’t get you everything in life. It’s a lesson that apparently came as a HUGE shock to Madonna today after a judge declined her adoption request. According to reports, a residency requirement in Malawi has prevented the Material Girl from flying back to New York with the 3-year-old girl, who she wanted to adopt as her own. Reports say the residency requirement for prospective parents is 18 to 24 months in Malawi. Madonna has homes in New York and London, but does not have a residence in Malawi despite the fact that she adopted her … Continue reading

What to do if You Face Pregnancy Discrimination

As I reported in this blog, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has reported an increase in pregnancy discrimination complaints. Many mistakenly believe this type of discrimination no longer happens with laws designed to prevent it. Unfortunately, women are still experiencing pregnancy discrimination in the work place. According to the EEOC, women in fields traditionally dominated by women and women of color are the groups most affected by the increase in complaints. The organization plans a large public awareness campaign in an attempt to reduce pregnancy discrimination. In the meantime, what should you do if you are faced with discrimination … Continue reading

Pregnancy DENIED!

When it comes to announcing baby news some celebrities are a bit more reluctant than others to share their excitement with the world. (More on Ashlee Simpson’s baby news in a bit.) Then, they are those who become the center of pregnancy rumors before they have even conceived. Take country singing superstar Faith Hill for example. Tim McGraw’s wife and the mother of three young daughters has spent the better part of this week denying reports that she is expecting her fourth child. The rumors of Hill’s pregnancy started when the blond beauty wore a flowing black top to the … Continue reading

Celebrity “Real” Or “Rumor” – Jennifer Lopez’s Pregnancy and Britney’s Eating Disorder

Jennifer Lopez Pregnant? Is there anything more embarrassing than being congratulated on a pregnancy when you aren’t expecting at all? Take a look at this picture taken of singer-actress Jennifer Lopez last week. That single photo help set off an avalanche of pregnancy rumors. The tabloid “In Touch” even went so far as to publish an article that claimed the 38-year-old superstar and her husband Marc Anthony were having twins. The rag reported that Lopez had an ultrasound performed in New York on September 12th and the test determined that she was 12 weeks along. “In Touch” also reported that … Continue reading

How a Transgender Couple Became Parents

When a couple is ready to become parents, they will do almost anything to make that happen. The desire to produce children who carry the parent’s DNA is strong. The Bowsers are a couple who wanted to have children and were able to produce two healthy sons that are biologically their own. The thing that makes this happy story a little different is that both parents happen to be transgender. Bianca and Nick Bowser were featured on 20/20. Their story is, in many ways, similar to thousands of other couples. They met. They fell in love. They eventually decided that … Continue reading

Insurer Shouldn’t have Discriminated Against Moms

Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation (MGIC) was telling women who applied for a mortgage insurance policy that their application would be denied unless they got off of maternity leave and returned to work. Courts decided that this was discrimination against women. MGIC now has to pay some very large settlements. In May of 2010, Carly Neals applied with PNC Mortgage to refinance the mortgage loan on the home that she and her husband own. They live in Wexford, Pennsylvania. PNC determined that since Ms. Neals wanted to borrow 90% of the value of her home that she required private mortgage insurance. … Continue reading

Trying to Figure Out What is Covered – Again

Yesterday, I spent time filling out an online application for health insurance. I have good reason to believe that I am going to be denied. At this time, I am waiting on an official decision from the insurance company. Now seemed like a good time to find out what the policy covers, just in case I do get approved (and can afford it). Technically speaking, I have now applied for the exact same insurance policy twice. The first time was by phone. The insurance representative that I spoke with told me that my application was denied because my allergies counted … Continue reading

Bill Could Make Insurers Have to Cover Maternity

There is a bill in California that is waiting for the Governor to sign it into law. If he does, then the law would require insurance companies to cover the cost of maternity care. Right now, very few health insurance policies will cover maternity. A bill called SB222 is waiting to be signed into law. It must be signed by Jerry Brown, the Governor of California, before it can become a law. The bill is part of a package of legislation that would require health insurance companies to actually cover maternity care. In short, the law will close the “loophole” … Continue reading
