Forever 27: Janis Joplin

In October 1970, the world was still reeling over the death of Jimi Hendrix. How such a wonderfully talented guitarist could be taken so suddenly was shocking. But, by the end of the month, the country would be mourning the death of another great rock icon. Janis Joplin was shunned by the others in high school. While it may have bothered her, she had more on her mind. She was already listening to blues greats like Leadbelly, Bessie Smith, Odetta, and Big Mama Thornton. Soon, Janis began to sing both blues and folk music, playing small coffee houses and bars … Continue reading

Infamous Hotel Rooms – Part 3

Here are even more hotel rooms that are known for their notorious reputations: Room 1220 – Westin Hotel, San Francisco, CA Room 1220 was the scene of one of the saddest Hollywood downfalls ever – that of comedian Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle. Back in the 20’s, Arbuckle was raking in a million a year at Paramount, making him one of the biggest stars of the day. However, on September 3, 1921, actress Virginia Rappe became ill in his hotel room, eventually dying of peritonitis. Summer of Love’s 40th Anniversary

Ah, the summer of 1967, the Summer of Love. Remember the incredible music: The Grateful Dead, the Doors, Janis Joplin, the Mamas and the Papas? Remember how everyone flocked to the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco, looking for love, peace, and understanding? Remember the crazy clothes, bare feet, and the hand painted flowers people wore like tattoos? Remember the Timothy Leary counterculture phrase “Turn on, tune in, drop out?” Yeah, me neither. Well, I remember it only from watching documentaries on television. But, it seemed like a cool time to be alive. Love was the buzzword of the day and … Continue reading

Bette’s New Home

Celine Dion made headlines (and multiple appearances on Oprah) in 2003 when it was announced that she would be moving to Las Vegas to serve as the headliner at Caesars Palace. Now, the singer says she is ready to move on (some tabloids are reporting that Dion is trying to get pregnant again) and will be replaced by another famous female crooner—Bette Midler. Midler’s got some big shoes to fill (though, I think she will slide into them nicely). After all, Dion’s show at the hotel’s 4,100-seat Colosseum has been sold out for what will be a nearly five-year run … Continue reading

Brittany Murphy Breaks Off Engagement

Poor Brittany Murphy, it seems she is always unlucky in love. If you remember, several years ago, she was involved in a highly publicized romance with Ashton Kutcher. The two met and started their romance while filming “Just Married.” Suddenly, they seemed to be in front of every camera in Hollywood, the epitome of “young and in love.” Then, almost as quickly as the romance began, it ended. And it did not end nicely either. Brittany threw a few ugly remarks Ashton’s way on a talk show, but he had already moved on to dating current wife, Demi Moore. Not … Continue reading
