Paul Newman’s Will and Sopranos Actor’s Trial Begins

Paul Newman’s will has been made public. So, who did the great actor who was so philanthropic decide to give his money and stuff to? As might be expected, most of his personal possessions went to his wife, Joanne Woodward including his real estate, musical instruments, and his collection of artwork. Woodward will also be in control of Newman’s production companies and real estate holdings, which includes the couple’s home in Westport, CT. However, he left many awards, including three Oscars (one for Best Actor for 1987’s The Color of Money and two honorary), an Emmy, three Golden Globes, and … Continue reading

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward: A Lesson in Long Marriages Hollywood-Style

I didn’t think I was going to have anything to write about Paul Newman’s death here in the Marriage Blog. I figured that’d be something for the girls who cover the Popular Culture Blog to write about. But as I’ve come across all the different tributes to his life, something’s become glaringly clear: Paul Newman was more than an actor, a race car driver, a camp founder, an activist, and a food line entrepreneur. He was a loving, devoted husband, something he seemed to be just as proud of as he was of any of his other accomplishments. Maybe even … Continue reading

Paul Newman Dead at 83

I was scanning Yahoo Entertainment news this morning, when I saw a small heading at the bottom that said “Legendary Actor Paul Newman Dies at Age 83.” I had already clicked on another link, then it hit me what I had actually read. I checked CNN, Fox News, USA Today, desperately looking for another confirmation, especially after my premature obituaries blog. But, there was nothing there. Paul Newman at a political rally for Eugene McCarthy in the parking lot of Kohl’s in Menominee … Continue reading

Heiress Sunny von Bulow Dies

You might not remember the story of Sunny von Bulow. The reason may be that the heiress has lived in a comatose state for the past 28 years. She died last Saturday at the age of 76, surrounded by her children and nurses, but still giving no indication that she knew they were there. Martha “Sunny” von Bulow started out life with a silver spoon in her mouth. She was the only child of utilities magnate George Crawford and Annie Laurie Warmack. When she was four years old, Sunny’s father died, leaving her millions of dollars. She briefly married His … Continue reading

Newbery Medal Winners: 1971-1980

You might be amazed to discover that e-mail first appeared in the 1970’s. That’s “write!” Electronic mail made its debut in 1971 — the same year that the cell phone was invented. In 1973, my dad’s favorite movie “The Sting” — starring a dashing Robert Redford and handsome Paul Newman — won the Oscar for Best Picture. A literature leap comes about in 1974, with Stephen King’s “Carrie” becoming a thrilling hit. The movie was released in 1976 and starred Sissy Spacek as the title character. 1971 Medal Winner: “Summer of the Swans” by Betsy Byars Honor Books “Knee Knock … Continue reading
