If you haven't already heard--party princess/hotel heiress Paris Hilton has been sentenced to 45 days in county jail for violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. Whether she actually sees the inside of a jail cell remains to be seen---a California judge has mandated she be incarcerated---but part of me still has a sinking feeling that with all the money that backs the Hilton name, somehow, some way, her daddy will be able to pull some strings and she'll regain her freedom. I hope that is not the case, but you never know... In any event, should the unthinkable happen, and Hilton is forced to ditch her designer duds and multi-millionaire dollar mansion for a stint at the Century Regional Detention Center (Los Angeles County's jailhouse for women located just south of downtown in Lynwood) this is what she can expect: According to the county's website, Hilton's jail cell will be a far cry from her luxurious L.A. digs. Try this on for size: the blonde bombshell will be forced to wipe her make-up-less eyes in a 12-by-8 foot cell with a toilet, sink, and a 6-inch wide window (hey, at least she has a window). Her new room will also be furnished with a mirror made of polished metal. And Hilton can say bye-bye to her late night-early morning runs to Burger King (she has been photographed on numerous occasions chowing down on their cheesy tots) and dinners at L.A.'s upscale sushi joints-according to jail supervisors, Hilton will be dining on three low-sodium meals a day, with dinner the only hot meal. Jail officials say beef and pork aren't permitted; rather the jail is strictly poultry-based. But, it may not be the type of food Hilton is served that proves to be the ultimate insult rather than the time at which it is served. Breakfast at the jail is served between 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., hours when the night-clubbing hopping princess is usually rolling in from a night on the town. Prison officials also revealed that inmates are allowed outside their cells for at least an hour each day to shower, watch television in the day room, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on jail telephones. For Hilton, who reportedly owns more than a dozen cell phones and Blackberries, this rule may come with devastating side effects (who knew jail could serve as a detox for cellphone addicts). When (or if) Hilton makes it through her 45-day jail stint she will join the ranks of other Hollywood celebrities who have also called the women's jail home-including Daryl Hannah. The actress was arrested last year for failing to leave an inner-city garden where farmers were being evicted. Former "Lost" actress Michelle Rodriguez also showed up to serve a 60-day jail sentence at the jail last year, but she was released in hours because of overcrowding. Hilton could only be so lucky. I think anyone who is caught driving under the influence should have to do mandatory jail time. A good friend of my parents daughter lost her husband and her 5 month old baby to a drunk driving accident (a drunk driver hit them). She was in a coma for a month. And yet, it seems as though DUI's are treated as a slap on the wrist. I could care less if she is Paris Hilton, she needs to understand the seriousness of her actions and she needs to be held accountable for her choices. I know she is being put in jail for driving on a suspended license, but perhaps she will think twice before getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.  Michele Cheplic |
