Paris Ditches Benji

You didn't really think those two would make it down the aisle, did you?

I'll admit; the way they constantly spoke of getting hitched and procreating, there was a moment there where I thought Paris Hilton had actually found her soul mate in rocker Benji Madden. But, then my cold medicine wore off and I figured this day would come sooner than later.

According to news reports, after nine months joined at the hip (and lips) the 27-year-old hotel heiress gave her heavily tattooed boy toy the boot.

"She is saddened by the breakup but they're just too different and they wanted different things in life," a source close to Hilton told PEOPLE magazine. "He was loyal and sweet but it was time to take a break."

Translation: Madden was a control freak, who reportedly stifled the socialite.

Official confirmation regarding the split is expected to come by the end of the week. However, sources close to the couple say they are speaking out now to clear up rumors that Hilton had reunited with former flame Stavros Niarchos with whom she was photographed hugging in Miami last weekend.

Hilton's pal tells the magazine that Niarchos and the former jailbird were simply engaged in friendly conversation. "In no way are they romantic, nor do they want to get back together," Hilton's friend says.

Adding fuel to the blaze of rumors was the fact that Hilton and Madden haven't been photographed together in weeks. A few days ago Hilton was spotted dancing on top of a couch at an L.A. club, while Madden was seen at hotspot Coco de Ville with Nicole Richie, who currently lives with his twin brother Joel Madden.

Sources close to the almost engaged couple (who were once dubbed "Beauty and the Beast" by one publication) say neither celeb was unfaithful to the other during their relationship. Rather, Hilton felt that Madden was too overbearing and she needed "space."

Here's hoping she finds it somewhere far, far away.
