The History of Father’s Day

In the United States, Father’s Day is celebrated in June. Many of us are aware of the sales that take place around that time, with discounts on gift items that will appeal to dads. What many people are unaware of is the history of Father’s Day. Here is the story behind Father’s Day, and some father related statistics to go along with it. The very first Father’s Day was celebrated in the United States on July 5, 1908. It was celebrated at a West Virginia church with a sermon that was in memory of 362 men who died in explosions … Continue reading

The Tale of Excess Easter Candy

Are your kids still on a sugar high from eating too much Easter candy? On Sunday, I gave my second grader fair warning: whatever candy she had not consumed by Tuesday would be given away or made into public property. Yes, mean mommy strikes again. Listen, I am just keeping it real. Whereas I truly appreciate the generosity of family and friends, who showered my daughter with sugary seasonal treats, what I don’t need is a house full of chocolate, jelly beans and bubble gum the likes of which we haven’t seen since Halloween. Forget about Easter being a spring … Continue reading

Exercise Helps Back Pain

Lately, I’ve had a lot of trouble with lower back pain. It isn’t something that started suddenly. I remember the first time I really felt like I hurt my back. I was 42 and bending over the bed to change my baby’s diaper. Yes, I realize having a baby at 41 probably put enough strain on my back alone. Anyhow, I bent over and something went kapow and I could hardly stand up. I walked funny for about a week until it cleared up. Just from bending over! (The copyright holder of this work released this work into the public … Continue reading

How Did Your Family Wear The Trends of Their Generations?

At this time of the year, when many of us are shopping for gifts for relatives, we are learning a lot about what the current trends for toys and fashion are. A fun idea for a family history scrapbook is to focus on what the trends were when you, your parents, and your grandparents were growing up. Looking at old photographs is a great way to get started, and you can also find a lot of great information online. For example, I was born in 1978 and my sister was born in 1980. Certain toys stand out in my mind … Continue reading

When to do When Business Communications are Misinterpreted

Communication is at the heart of every home-based business. When you are working, you are communicating with clients, suppliers, and other types of people. Sometimes, our communications do not send the messages that we intend them to. Perhaps we don’t return a call or email promptly or that we send a poorly worded email or letter. Maybe the tone of voice that we used when speaking was not pleasant. Something happened that caused the recipient of the communication to perceive our message differently than we intended for them to perceive it. When communications are misinterpreted, the person on the receiving … Continue reading

The Sound of Innocence

Dang you Saturday morning cartoons! If it weren’t for NBC’s Qubo cartoon line-up and CBS’ Cookie Jar TV children’s programming block, I’m pretty sure my 6-year-old would be blissfully unaware of the words “Kidz” and “Bop.” She’d also be unfamiliar with the Aluma Wallet, Topsy Turvey and WOW Storage Containers. She placed the aforementioned “As Seen on TV Products” on a list she made for me to give to Santa last year. Meanwhile, she saved the Kidz Bop CD to add to her own wish list. In the end, Santa delivered on the latter and none of the former. So, … Continue reading

My Landscaping Oops

I don’t know who made the bigger mistake. Me, the actual culprit, or my husband. You see, after listening to numerous complaints about the landscaping in front of our house, my other half simply got out the hedge trimmer, handed it to me and told me to trim the bushes any way I liked. He either had extreme confidence in me, or figured that I couldn’t make the bushes much worse than they already were. “But, but, but…” I protested. “Just start on the outside and work all of the way around.” “I’m too short to get the top.” “I’ll … Continue reading

Caution: Preschooler Ahead

I was a big, big kid. In fact, I was such a tall child that at nine years old, a neighbor down the street told me that I was too big to be trick-or-treating at Halloween, and that I should be ashamed of myself. By age twelve, I was 5 foot 8 and the boys in my class looked up at me in horror during square dancing class (yes, they make you take square dancing class in Canada). By the time I was fourteen, I swore that if anyone asked me if I played basketball again, I would scream and … Continue reading

Worst Father of the Year Award: And the Winner is… Alec Baldwin?

This is a tough one. It wouldn’t be, if these grown men, who were blessed with healthy children, didn’t engage in such extraordinarily despicable behavior. So does the award go to dog collar daddy, these self-centered pathetic patriarchs, or this furious father, who could use some serious anger management counseling? They are all quite deserving of the bad dad award, in my opinion, and if I hadn’t heard the latest from the poster boy of pompous pops, I’d gladly watch them duke it out for the title. But, oops, he did it again! Alec Baldwin simply refuses to learn from … Continue reading

Sean Penn Files for Divorce Again and Jon Gosselin Accused of Cheating Again

Oops, he did it again! Two times may be the charm for Sean Penn, who seems intent on getting rid of his wife Robin Wright Penn. For the second time in two years, the double Oscar winner has filed for separation from his actress wife. According to TV’s “Extra,” Penn filed legal papers last Friday, just three days shy of the couple’s 13th wedding anniversary. The actor is asking the court to grant him joint custody of the pair’s two children Dylan and Hopper. Penn and Wright married in 1996. In December 2007 Penn filed for legal separation, was photographed … Continue reading
