What is the World Coming To? Obama Girl Dolls Making Headlines Again

Remember those controversial Sasha and Malia Obama dolls that have been the subject of way too many of my blogs? Well, apparently, people don’t want to bid aloha to them just yet. In fact, here’s some news that shouldn’t surprise anyone: The Obama girl look-alikes are HOT, HOT, HOT! You saw that coming, right? A couple of months ago the foot-tall dolls, which were marketed as part of the TyGirlz Collection, were introduced to the world. Sweet Sasha sported a pink dress and green leggings with her hair in braids. Meanwhile, Marvelous Malia donned a ponytail, green long t-shirt and … Continue reading

Aloha to Obama Girl Dolls

Mom-in-Chief Michelle Obama spoke and Beanie Babies maker Ty finally listened. The toy maker just renamed the dolls that bear an uncanny resemblance to First Daughters Malia and Sasha Obama. Last month First Lady Michelle Obama went public saying that she felt it was “inappropriate to use young, private citizens for marketing purposes.” But, at the time, Ty reps maintained that the dolls were not exact replicas of the Obama girls and had no plans to pull them from shelves. Now, in the spirit of compromise (or threats from loyal customers), Ty has decided to change the dolls’ names. The … Continue reading

First Mom Speaks Out about Obama Girl Dolls

Michelle Obama thinks her two daughters are dolls, but she doesn’t want the rest of the world to see them that way. In one of her first official moves, President Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle went public denouncing a popular toy maker for marketing dolls with the same names as her children, Malia and Sasha. Not only do the dolls share the same names as the young Obama offspring, but they also look remarkably similar to the first daughters as well. (See for yourself by clicking here.) The resemblance didn’t sit well with the new first lady, who took a swing … Continue reading

Getting Tickets to Barack Obama’s Inauguration Parties

On January 20th, history will be made when Barack Obama is sworn in as the first African American president of the United States. As United States citizens who elected him, we should be able to attend some of the celebratory events in person, right? Eh, well, maybe not. (This United States Congress image is in the public domain.) There will be many events, but your chances of getting tickets to one is probably slim and none. Don’t let anyone on eBay fool you by saying they have one of the “New Path to Freedom” inauguration ceremony tickets for sale because … Continue reading

Bill Cosby Speaks Out About Obama Win

Given all that we know about Bill Cosby, would any of us really be surprised if President-elect Barack Obama asked the actor to become an advisor on education issues? I know I wouldn’t. The award-winning actor/comedian/author turned education advocate isn’t publicly addressing offers by Obama (right now anyway), but he is speaking out about his influence on the nation’s first African-American president. There’s an argument circulating around media-types that Cosby’s mega-successful NBC sitcom “The Cosby Show” (which aired from 1984-1992) laid the groundwork for President-elect Obama by presenting an appealing black family to influential young voters, who grew up equipped … Continue reading

Obama Girls Going Hollywood?

Thanks to their father’s new job, we know President-elect Barack Obama’s two young daughters are headed to Washington, but if the folks at Disney have their way, Malia and Sasha Obama may have a chance to take Hollywood by storm as well. In a statement released earlier this week execs at the Disney Channel (one of the Obama girls’ favorite TV networks) invited the newest first children the opportunity to appear on the mega-popular hit series “Hannah Montana.” “We’re pleased that Malia and Sasha are fans and, as long as their parents say it’s OK, they are invited to the … Continue reading

Rock the Mini Vote

Will you be bringing your kids along when you place your vote on Tuesday? Most parents wouldn’t dream of dragging a squirmy tot the polls on what is supposed to be an historical Election Day, especially since long lines have been making headlines from coast-to-coast. However, if you have the means, you might consider sharing the voting experience with your child. Today, my third grader came home with a note from her teacher encouraging moms and dads to have their kids accompany them in the voting booth. She wants the kids to get a first-hand look at the electoral process. … Continue reading

How Often Do You Swing with Your Kids?

My kid’s been swinging since she was five-weeks-old. Now, at the ripe old age of four, she finds it more enjoyable to push me on a swing, then jump on the one next to mine and race me to “the moon.” I never win that game. Be that as it may, swings, or perhaps more specifically, parents swinging with their children, has been a hot topic this week following the delivery of a new pimped out swing set to the White House. Apparently, President and Mrs. Obama decided to treat their daughters, 7-year-old, Sasha, and 10-year-old, Malia, to a deluxe-edition … Continue reading

Grandma in the White House

Now that they’ve exhausted the puppy issue, the media has suddenly become obsessed with the prospect of Michelle Obama’s mother becoming the First Grandmother and moving into the White House with the rest of the family come January. Granny’s in the hoooooouse! According to news reports, after some prodding, Michelle convinced her 71-year-old mother Marian Robinson to leave her home on the South Side of Chicago and move to Washington, D.C. with the rest of the Obama’s. Initial reports had the Obama’s looking for new digs for Robinson near the White House, but now some media outlets are reporting that … Continue reading
