Making Money by Marrying

No, this post does not feature tips on dowries; rather, it will hopefully help debunk myths that many people have regarding monetary wedding gifts. Some individuals staunchly believe that it is tacky or lazy to give newlyweds cash in lieu of an item listed on their wedding gift registry. According to wedding etiquette experts, cash is actually a very practical wedding present, in more ways than one. For starters, unless it is culturally acceptable, most couples can’t get away with requesting guests give cash-only as a wedding gift, so by taking the initiative to present money as a gift you … Continue reading

Minnesota Couple Protests Marriage Law by Marrying in Canada

As most of you well know from the media attention that marriage has been given the past few weeks, much debate has arisen about legal gay marriages. California has now joined Massachusetts in allowing legal gay marriage. Canada, our neighboring country, also recognizes the union between two mates of the same sex. Same sex couples are becoming more and more common among the bonds of relationships. The push to give all unions of two persons the right to legally join is not going away for the other 48 states. Some Minnesotans feel that protest is one way to voice their … Continue reading

Will Smith Says Divorce is not an Option

There are many celebrity marriage tales in which the couple splits or files for divorce very soon after marrying. It is almost the Hollywood standard that your marriage should not last over a few years. While several different articles have been written about specific celebrity marriage break ups and why Hollywood marriages do not last, it was refreshing to read an article on one star that is out to make his marriage last a lifetime. Will Smith, actor and singer, has made his commitment to his wife and vows to keep the commitment strong. He says the way to make … Continue reading

Marriage Types: Young

Like people, relationships and marriages are different. They vary in many aspects and areas. Some couples are more committed with covenant marriages while others are more open with polygamous marriages. Other people are in their second marriage. While some people marry later in life, some marry very early in life. I know some couples who married before they even graduated from high school. Like those couples who marry late in life, there are several reasons why a couple may choose to marry early or young. Some couples marry young due to the fact that they are expecting a baby. The … Continue reading

Marriage Types: Later Life

So far we have discussed covenant marriages, second marriages, and polygamous marriages. It is amazing how many different types of relationship bonds couples can have. Even traditional marriages can come in various forms. Couples marry at all different stages in their lives and for all different reasons. Some couples marry later in their lives. There are several different reasons why a person may put marriage on hold during what most consider to be the common marrying years. Some couples do not marry until they are in their late 30s or 40s. Some people wish to get married before this age … Continue reading

Not the Marrying Type

If I have to hear Anna Kournikova whine about how she never wants to get married I might scream. The tennis star made headlines earlier this week when she told reporters that while she has been dating her sexy boyfriend Enrique Iglesias for three years she has no plans to marry him… despite the fact that he has been proposing to her for the last year. What gives? Maybe it’s age. The ravishing blonde former tennis star is almost 27 while her hunky Latin lover is days away from turning 33. (Still young in my book.) Or perhaps Kournikova is … Continue reading

Marrying Your High School Sweetheart

As those of you who read my introduction to the marriage section know, I married my high school sweetheart. We began dating when I was only fifteen. We dated throughout high school with a few break-ups along the way. We married after graduating from college. Therefore my husband and I have been married for seven years but have been together as a couple for fourteen years. I have dated other people but not seriously. I have never been in a true lengthy relationship with any other person than my husband. I know several other couples with this same situation. If … Continue reading

Marriage: It’s Not Called Dating for a Reason

As we’ve discussed previously, living together is not like being married — in fact – many couples who have cohabitated and then married agree that there is a different emotion, feeling and expectation associated with marriage that is not present in cohabitation. Similarly, while I have also talked about the need for married couples to enjoy couple time and date nights, marriage is not dating. When We Date Dating in the United States is a mixture of courtship, friendship and romance. Many individuals may date without ever expecting the relationship to go anywhere. A date happens because one individual or … Continue reading

Inclusion of People with Intellectual Disabilities is Important

Does someone in your family have an intellectual disability (ID)? A survey shows that inclusion helps people who do not have intellectual disabilities to accept people who do have them. Personally knowing someone who has ID helps people to move past old stereotypes. A survey was done by Harris Poll on behalf of The Special Olympic International World Games, and in partnership with Shriver Media. The survey was conducted online between July 13 and July 15 of 2015. A total of 2,021 United States adults (ages 18+) took part in the survey. Out of this group, 1,103 were identified as … Continue reading
