Have You Ever Kept A Scripture Journal?

These days it seems like we are living in a digital world. I have the scriptures on my IPod that I can easily pull out and read. In church, I frequently see people using their smart devices to read their scriptures in class. My primary chorister even uses her IPad to lead the music each week. While technology is a beautiful tool, I wonder about its effects on my own scripture study. No longer do we use red pencils to read our scriptures. And, are the days gone where your children might catch you reading your scriptures and be inspired … Continue reading

Mind Your Manners

As a nation we seem to have lost the ability to be courteous to each other. When was the last time someone held a door for you, said excuse me or even thank you? Everyday we are surrounded by rude people. Recently at work I was walking up the stairs as two women were walking down. Instead of one of the women moving to the same side as the other woman, they both barreled down the stairs as if I wasn’t trying to come up them. I actually had to step backwards, onto the landing to keep from being run … Continue reading

The State of Your Home Affects Your Mood

Do you want to relieve some stress in your life? Then make your home as inviting as possible. People don’t always realize how the state of your house can affect your mood. There is nothing like coming home after a long, tiring day of work to be able to walk into your home and feel good about your surroundings. On the other hand, there is nothing like coming home after a long, tiring day of work and walking into a mess. Who wants to look at piles of dishes or papers scattered all over? Who wants to deal with the … Continue reading

Fear Not

I read an article recently about having courage that got me thinking about some of the decisions I make in my own life. Do I make them because they are safe? Or, do I make them because they are the right choice for me? As a child, I was very timid. I always wanted my sister, who was younger, to try something first. I would see it was OK, then I would jump in to whatever the task at hand was. I was hardly ever the instigator. As an adult, I have overcome a lot of my fears. For example, … Continue reading

Tweet Tweet Is Your Business on Twitter?

Home-based professionals are often looking for cost-effective ways to get the word out about their business. Recently, social media like Twitter have become very popular with businesses large and small. Social media gives you the ability to share information with your clients and potential clients quickly and easily, and it puts the information right where they are looking – at their computer or smartphone. Just like with any form of advertising, your message will only be effective if you know how to use that media properly. For example, visiting blogs and leaving spammy comments with a link to your site … Continue reading

Are You Committed?

A member of my ward said something to me not too long ago that made me kind of chuckle to myself. She said that my husband and I were “platinum members” of the ward. I had never heard that phrase. I laughed and asked her what it meant. I’m not sure if it was a term that she coined, or had heard somewhere else, but regardless, she explained that it meant that we were active, always participated, and were the type of members to never say no. It made me think of President Uchtdorf’s recent First Presidency Address, Brother, I’m … Continue reading

Does a Fit Body Mean You Are Healthier?

I overheard a conversation one day with my daughter and her teen friends. Someone said something along the lines of, “You don’t need to exercise, you’re skinny.” That opened up a dialogue later on between my daughter and me. I explained to her that exercise isn’t about the size of your body; it’s about your health. I think that’s one of the biggest detriments to health in general. We equate the way someone looks with their need for exercise. But does a fit body mean you are healthier? Not necessarily. Health is something that starts within. It’s within the mind, … Continue reading

Is Addiction In Your Genes?

Addiction is a very serious condition that affects about ten percent of the population. It affects people of all ethnicities, and all socioeconomic backgrounds. The consequences of addiction are diverse; it affects both physical and mental health and economic, social, and emotional well being. Our understanding of the workings of addiction has grown tremendously in recent years, as more and more research on addiction has been done. Research has shown that genetic predisposition to addiction, along with poor coping skills, are the two factors that determine whether an individual will struggle with addiction. Studies that were conducted by observing twins, … Continue reading

Putting Your Marriage on Hold

Are you guilty of putting your marriage on hold? Are the choices you are making hindering your marriage? In so many cases couples seem to think their marriage is something that can pick up and it will be there when they want it. Instead of taking time to make it the best marriage it can be, time is invested into work and career options, or into being a success in the work place instead. After all, your spouse will still be there at the end of the day. But will they? Sometimes it seems to me that if couples poured … Continue reading

Staying One Step Ahead of Your Teens

If there is one bit of advice I would give to every parent of a teenager, it is to stay one step ahead of your teen. That means you have to be knowledgeable of what teens are facing and going through. Keeping up on teen fads, fashions and trends will help. All you have to do is Google something like “dangerous teen trends” and you will find a wealth of information at your fingertips. I also suggest watching Dr. Phil who often has shows on the latest teen trends. It is very eye-opening. I recently read a Consumer Reports list … Continue reading
