Newsmen Making News

ABC News’ Charlie Gibson took a break from his anchoring duties recently to urge students at his father’s alma mater to be honest and fair. Gibson made the remarks during commencement ceremonies at the school. “It sounds old-fashioned, but I will tell you there are ethical imperatives in this life,” Gibson told members of the graduating class. “Compassion. Honesty. Fairness. Trustworthiness. Respect for others. If those things are not the bedrocks of your life, you will suffer for their absence in time. And I would wager you won’t much like yourself.” Gibson also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters … Continue reading

After the Election: Oprah’s “Human Hanky” and Obama’s Poet—-Not

The queen of talk referred to him as “Mr. Man” while others dubbed him “Oprah’s human hanky.” Two days after appearing on newscasts broadcast around the world the bespectacled man who gave Oprah Winfrey a shoulder to cry on in Grant Park on Election Day finally revealed his real name: Sam Perry. Sam is the man… for now anyway. Perry’s 15 minutes of fame kicked off Tuesday night during President-elect Barack Obama’s acceptance speech. The Year In Review: Television

Oh what a year it’s been… in television that is. Some of your favorite shows may still be on (“Desperate Housewives”) while others may have bit the dust (“Will and Grace”), but look back at 2006 and you’ll see definite trends existed in the world of make believe. More Dramas Taking a cue from hits like “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives,” the networks debuted one drama after another – too many, in fact, according to media analysts, for busy viewers to keep up with. The winners: NBC’s “Heroes” and “Medium.” The losers: Fox’s “Vanished” and the CW’s “Runaway.” Nightly News ABC—-Tragedy … Continue reading

Thank Goodness For My Computer

I am thankful for my computer for many reasons: it allows to me to work at home, it helps me stay connected to family and friends, and in 2006 it helped preserve a piece of my sanity. For a few months this year we didn’t have cable, which meant my 2-year-old daughter was without her beloved “Wonder Pets,” “Wow! Wow! Wubbzy,” and her best friends, “The Backyardigans.” At first she was a bit shell shocked that her daily routine was being altered (she gets to watch 30 minutes of TV in the morning and 30 minutes at night). But, I … Continue reading

CBS has just announced that it will become the first network to simulcast its evening news broadcast online, starting on the night of Couric’s debut as anchor September 5th. This is big news in the world of broadcast journalism as all of the networks have aggressively pushed their newscasts onto the Web over the past couple of years. They have been almost forced to do so since the audience for evening newscasts has plummeted in recent years. The idea to simulcast … Continue reading
