More Celebrity Divorces

A couple of weeks ago, I blogged that it is “It’s a revolving marital door in Hollywood” and this week, the door shut on a few more marriages. The first celebrity split I learned about this week was Laura Dern and Ben Harper. Harper filed for divorce last Friday, stating irreconcilable differences. He also asked for joint custody of the couple’s children, son Ellery Walker, 9, and Jaya, 5. Dern and Harper started dating shortly after her then-boyfriend Billy Bob Thornton married Angelina Jolie while Dern was away shooting a movie. Dern and Harper dated for five years before marrying … Continue reading

Katie Holmes’ New $43K Makeover and an Unexpected Hollywood Miracle

Recession? What recession? While the rest of the world (or at least us non-Hollywood types) is pinching pennies in these tough economic times, Tom Cruise’s wife is spending like there’s no tomorrow. Then again, maybe, Katie Holmes’ $43,000 makeover is just what the economy needs to help stimulate it. It’s just too bad she couldn’t drop the dough in her home country. According to reports, Holmes new longer do comes courtesy of some talented hair stylists in Japan. The UK’s Daily Mail claims Holmes shelled out £30,000 – which at today’s exchange rate comes out to more than $43,000 – … Continue reading

Longest Celebrity Marriages

People joke about celebrity marriages being between two members of a different species rather than two members of the human race. In other words, one actual year of marriage can be translated into 10 celebrity marriage years, as if these people were dogs or cats. Now granted, I am sure the pressure in a celebrity marriage must be astronomical. Everyone is focused on every little thing celebrities do, and I am sure things get misconstrued, leading to more problems. But every marriage has its weaknesses and its strengths, and celebrity, like anything else, might be able to pull two people … Continue reading

What Are Secret Marriages?

As you may know, I’ve been working on a series covering marriage laws throughout the 50 United States. Interestingly enough, as I was looking up laws in Michigan, I found out they have had a law on the books since 1897 governing secret marriages. So what is a secret marriage? So glad you asked, because I was curious and went to do some digging. Secret Marriages Secret marriages are just that – a marriage that occurs in secret. They are civil ceremonies that allow a couple to get married without there being an open record of the marriage. Prince Albert … Continue reading

Hollywood’s Most Married – Part II

I thought it strange that I started to blog about celebs with the most marriages under their belt and ended up doing one whole blog about Elizabeth Taylor. There were really many more I wanted (and will) talk about. But then I starting thinking – oh, I forgot the queens of them all – the Gabor Sisters. Talk about your serial brides! Zsa Zsa, Eva, and Magda have had 21 marriages between them…and 20 divorces. Zsa Zsa is currently on her ninth marriage, Magda had six, and Eva had five. Incredibly, their mother, Jolie, was married only twice – to … Continue reading

More Short Hollywood Marriages

The last blog was of unbelievably short marriages – some only lasting hours and days. But here are a few more that lasted a little longer. Actress Courtney Thorne-Smith married scientist Andrew Conrad in June of 2000. It was embarrassing to In Style Weddings magazine when Thorne-Smith graced the cover in a beautiful wedding dress, only a week after announcing the dissolve of her seven-month marriage. Everyone was surprised when Pretty Woman Julie Roberts married country crooner Lyle Lovett. An unlikely pair, their marriage lasted a little less than two years, although there are rumors that the no-so-happy couple really … Continue reading

Vegetarian Athletes

Athletes are normally very particular about their bodies and what they put in them. After all, without healthy bodies, it is hard to do what they do. But, I realized there are quite a few athletes that eat a strictly vegetarian diet. Some people wonder if a no meat diet is good for you. It certainly hasn’t done these athletes any harm: Bill Pearl Pearl is a four-time Mr. Universe. He didn’t become a vegetarian until he was 39, but guess what? He won his final Mr. Universe two years later, at age 41. Bode Miller Skiier Miller not only … Continue reading

Plankers Beware!

My best friend’s daughter planks. Or is that the right wording? Should I call her a planker? If you don’t know what planking is, don’t feel so bad. Microsoft word balked at my using planks as a verb and planker as a noun. Planking is the craze where you lie straight down on something, with your arms to your side. Normally, I prefer this to be my bed or couch, but plankers love to plank in unusual places, take pictures of themselves doing this, then post it on a social media site such as Facebook. The more outrageous a place … Continue reading

Trouble for Sandra Bullock and Jesse James

They seemed like the perfect couple less than a week ago. Sandra Bullock won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in The Blind Side. Her husband, Jesse James, who looks more at home in a garage than on a red carpet, happily joined her and beamed with pride when she won. He told PEOPLE, “She’s beautiful. She’s amazing. She takes my breath away. Sometimes I look at her and I do, I just lose my breath.” Now cut from the happy couple at the Academy Awards to the news today of rumors of a split due to infidelity. PEOPLE … Continue reading

The 2008 Golden Raspberry Awards

It is time for the Golden Raspberry Awards, more affectionately known as the Razzies. Well, at least affectionately by those not receiving one. While the Oscars honor the best films of the year, the Razzies “honor” the worst. Since 1981, the Razzies have razzed the best of the worst. The awards are given out the day before the Oscars, but typically the winners don’t show up for the ceremony. While some entertainers reluctantly accept their Razzie awards after the ceremony, a few have actually showed up to accept their awards in person. The first was director Paul Verhoeven who won … Continue reading
