Defining Back-to-School Cool

Colorful video game characters, animal prints, and swear words with one or two missing letters, all splashed on tight fitting tees. Are these the coolest, trendiest and sassiest back-to-school styles for your student? Marketers of back-to-school apparel have been telling me for months that these are the hottest school duds for my little diva. Thank God my kid wears uniforms to school. Animal prints have nothing on the brutality that exists in the wild world of back-to-school fashions. The advertising is relentless. Trends are being pushed left and right; by the time you get through a single primetime program you … Continue reading

Are You Giving Your Kids the Kiss of Death?

I am more J.Crew than JLo or JWoww. I prefer khakis to skinny jeans and respectable cardigans to revealing camisoles. And that goes double for cosmetics. If it were not for the fact that I have skin like a Shar-Pei and a daughter that I am forced not to embarrass in public, I would probably go without make-up every. single. day. While I am far from a Japanese Kabuki actor, I do apply some foundation, mascara and eyeliner on days I am required to venture beyond my driveway. If I forget to add one or more of the aforementioned cosmetics … Continue reading

Fashion Forward: Wedgie-Proof Underwear

Forget about Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan, the hottest fashion designers on the block these days are 8-year-old twin boys. If you tuned into “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” last week you might be familiar with Justin and Jared Serovich’s fashion forward creation—-wedgie-proof underwear also known as the “Rip Away 1000.” The boys rigged boxer shorts and fabric fasteners to hold together some seams—and voila—instant protection from underwear grabbing bullies. “When the person tries to grab you and tries to give you a wedgie – they just rip away,” Justin explained to DeGeneres. The third graders say they came … Continue reading

Must Have Items For Fall That You May Already Own

Just in time for Halloween the weather around here is finally beginning to feel fall-like. (Never mind that I pulled out our sweaters and corduroy pants months ago.) As I perused my closet the other night I was pleasantly surprised (make that shocked) to see that I actually own a few items that fashion experts claim are “must-have” pieces for Fall 2007. This, of course, means that if my closet has items fit for a fall fashionista, yours must too. Take a look at the following list and see if you have the makings of a trendy fall collection in … Continue reading

Back To School Fashion Trends

I ran over to the mall this morning to get a new battery for my watch. BIG mistake. I would guess that every intermediate and high school student in the county was there buying new outfits to wear to the first day of school tomorrow. Growing up I went to Catholic school, so needless to say, my summers weren’t spent doing the mall crawl searching for the perfect back to school ensemble. Rather, my mom spent the better half of the summer sewing school uniforms (navy blue slacks and skirts paired with white shirts and navy blue block knot ties). … Continue reading

“Does My Butt Look Big In This?”

How many times have you uttered those words? My friends and family will tell you they’ve lost count of how many times I’ve made them to “honestly” answer that question. As I think about it, I can’t remember a time I’ve gone shopping for jeans without raising the butt question. After all, who wants to drop $50 on good denim if it makes your rear look unflattering? I, for one, appreciate having someone who can convince me to put back that pair of super skinny jeans… and stick with khakis. But what happens when you are jeans shopping ALONE? It’s … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potpourri: Hired, Fired, and Very Much Desired

HIRED! What do Australian actress Naomi Watts and Harry Potter have in common? Read on. Watts hasn’t even given birth yet (though she’s reportedly due to pop any hour now) and she has already booked her next post-pregnancy acting gig. Forget about being a stay-at-home mom, Watts has reportedly signed on to star in the big screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s sixth book in the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince.” According to Mugglenet.com, Watts will play Narcissa Malfoy, mother to school bully Draco Malfoy. Shooting is scheduled to begin in September. So by my calculations she … Continue reading

Fashion Sense

Do remember this line from middle school: “Here’s a dollar go out and buy some fashion sense.” Some guy I went to school with would say that to all the girls. (It’s no wonder why he made it through high school without a date.) That was years ago and I am still no fashionista, but I do like to think that I know what looks good on me. What about you? Can you tell the difference between fabulous and frumpy? Are you constantly trying to keep up with trends no matter how they look on you? It’s great to be … Continue reading

Men’s Fashion Week

Just days after the death of legendary fashion designer Gianfranco Ferre his colleagues and fans gathered to pay tribute to him in Italy during men’s fashion week. A teary-eyed crowd gave a standing ovation to pay honor to the late designer at the presentation of his summer menswear collection. The show took place exactly a week after the 62-year old designer died of a brain hemorrhage in a Milan hospital. Ferre’s associates say the summer 2008 collection draws its inspiration from “the sea, from color scheme to fabrics shimmering like sun’s reflection on water.” The designer, known as the “architect” … Continue reading
