Michael Phelps' Mom Scores Big at the Olympics Tooby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 23 Aug 2008 12:32 PM Swimming sensation Michael Phelps is not the only one in the family who made waves at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The woman who gave birth to the "Baltimore Bullet," Debbie Phelps, has just been crowned with the title of "Mom of the Olympic Games." The honor was given by Johnson's Baby and comes in the form of a hefty check the company plans to donate in Debbie's name to her favorite children's charity. The middle school principal from Maryland says she was honored by the award and is pleased that the money will be going to help children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As you might know the condition is near and dear to Debbie's heart. Not only was her son Michael diagnosed with the mental disorder, but Debbie is also the national spokesperson for the Facebook group ADHD Moms. Michael Phelps may be the winningest Olympian of all time, but at age nine he lacked focus and was diagnosed with ADHD. Debbie says if it weren't for health professionals who helped provide her and Michael with proper care and understanding for kids with ADHD she doesn't know what their lives would be like today. Today Debbie's son is a 23-year-old, who shattered multiple world records and hit a gold mine at the 2008 Olympics. He is now off to London where he will appear tomorrow at the hand-off of the Olympic torch. But, before he left China he caused some ripples out of the pool when he was caught making out with 20-year-old Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice. The leggy brunette, who has three gold medals of her own, reportedly just broke up with Phelps's rival from Down Under, Eamon Sullivan. According to the New York Post, Rice was spotted Monday night passionately kissing the American swimming phenom at a party outside the Olympic Village. I guess the media is not the only one who wants a piece of Debbie Phelps' son. And speaking of the press, the New York Post is also reporting that Simon & Schuster just signed Michael to write "Built To Succeed," a behind-the-scenes look at the training regimen that led to his victorious performances. The book will be out in December just in time for the holiday shopping rush. I'm sure the publishers are hoping it will fill many stockings given that they reportedly gave Phelps a $1 million advance for writing it. My bet is Phelps' new book does better than his last one. "Beneath the Surface," sold only 10,000 copies when it was released in 2005.
