Mel Gibson's Wife Files for Divorce

Mel Gibson is on the road to being a swinging single again.

Finally, his martial status will match his behavior.

According to reports, Gibson's wife, Robyn filed for divorce last Thursday. Interestingly, though, court documents show that the couple has been separated for three years, with Robyn moving out of the family home less than a month after Mel's infamous DUI arrest/anti-Semitic rant incident.

The actor's issues with alcohol date back to 1984, when he was arrested for drunk driving in Toronto. Shortly after that public misstep Mel admitted that he had battled alcohol problems throughout his adult life, but that his religion and marriage kept him on track.

"My wife is a saint," the movie star said at the time. "Life is about love and commitment and screw anyone who thinks that's a cliche."

Alcohol may not have been the only thing that screwed up the Gibson's marriage. There have been accusations of Mel's infidelity, and recent photos of him kissing and hugging a Russian singer named Oksana near his beach home in Costa Rica may have been what finally prompted Robyn to file divorce papers.

While God commands that we shall forgive as much as 7 times 70 (in a single day), it appears there was a limit to Robyn's capacity to tolerate "The Passion of the Christ" star's inappropriate behavior.

Then again, perhaps Mel never repented or asked for forgiveness... at least from Robyn anyway.

What the actor asked from God remains a mystery, but ironically, it was on Easter Sunday that news of Gibson's divorce leaked out.

According to reports, Gibson attended Traditional Latin Mass at the Roman Catholic Church he had built near his Malibu, California home in 2005. However, his wife wasn't with him to celebrate the holiday, and after the service, Mel reportedly told some parishioners, "Well, she's filed for divorce."

The Gibson's have been married for 28 years and have seven children together: 9-year-old son Thomas, Milo, 19, Louis, 21, William, 24, twins Edward and Christian, 26, and daughter Hannah, 28.

According to the divorce papers, Robyn is seeking joint custody of Thomas and spousal support.

Sources claim the Gibson's didn't sign a prenuptial agreement when they married in 1980. Mel didn't begin making his mega-millions until nearly a decade later. The super star is now worth an estimated $1.2 billion and under the laws of California, community property -- which includes earnings -- is divided 50/50.

Evidently hypocrisy comes with a hefty price tag.

Reports say it will be the most expensive divorce settlement in Hollywood history and Robyn deserves every penny, IMO.

I think he made 80 gazillion dollars alone from The Passion of the Christ.
