Making Lemonade From A Rotten Lemon

The title of this blog came to me in seconds… and I think once you hear this story you will see why I think it is apropos. A woman in Vermont spends months and piles of money planning an extravagant wedding, all the while thinking she is about to embark on a life’s journey with her best friend. Then six weeks before her big day she learns that her fiancé has been cheating on her. Kyle Paxman planned to party the night away in the arms of her beloved at the Basin Harbor Club on Lake Champlain. Her reception venue … Continue reading

Marriage In The News: Jilted Bride Makes Lemonade from Lemons

The title is a bit cliché, but when I read about Kyle Paxman’s story – I couldn’t help but feel for this woman and what she managed to do with her heartbreak. It seems that just six weeks before her wedding, a stranger appeared at her business office with multiple e-mail messages and supporting evidence that Ms. Paxman’s fiancé was having an affair with the stranger’s girlfriend. It’s hardly surprising that the wedding was called off, but Ms. Paxman’s dress had already arrived and all the arrangements, pre-payments and more were done. There were more than a 180 guests invited … Continue reading

Did You See That?

The other day my young daughter and I were taking advantage of a beautiful spring day (low 60s) by visiting a lake park to feed the birds. While my daughter merrily chased after any animal with wings (pelting them with the bread they were supposed to “want” to eat) I noticed three men ice fishing on what was left of the frozen lake water. Ice fishing on a 60-degree day when the lake had already started thawing? That deserved a second look (make that a long stare) and a cellphone “in case ice breaks call…” I have a feeling the … Continue reading

Runaway Bride—The Opera

No, the new show isn’t a way for actress Julia Roberts to prove that she has a terrific set of lungs. In fact, the new opera isn’t a take off of the 1999 film version of “Runaway Bride.” Rather, the musical is using the story of real-life runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks as its inspiration. “Runaway Bride” will be appearing at a local Minnesota theater in the form of a rock opera. The show is scheduled to open in October at the Red Clay Theatre and Arts Center in Duluth. If you decide to attend don’t expect to see a comedic … Continue reading

Adventures In Real Life

You know you’re a diehard collector when… well, when you find a way to fork over $2.3 million for an item that originally went for a grand. According to a Texas auction gallery, an anonymous art collector recently paid more than $2 million for a $1,000 bill printed in 1890. “This $1,000 bill is one of only two known of its type; the other surviving example is in the museum at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco,” the president of Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries told news reporters. The rare item also comes with a sweet name. According to experts, … Continue reading
