Mackenzie Phillips Arrested for Drug Possession

Hum, maybe some day, celebrities will realize that their messed up lives can affect their kids. Scratch that, maybe ALL parents will realize that their messed up lives can affect their kids. But, anyhow, for right now, I will talk about the latest celebrity child in the news - Mackenzie Phillips.

For those that don't know, Mackenzie is the oldest daughter of now-deceased folk singer John Phillips. By the way, Mackenzie counts among her half siblings former Wilson Phillips member China Phillips and actress/model Bijou Phillips. John came to prominence in the Sixties with the group the Mamas and the Papas. But, the band was ruined by drug use and promiscuity among the band members.

When Mackenzie was young, she said she used to roll marijuana joints for her father. She told USA Weekend magazine in an interview almost 10 years ago that "I grew up in mansions, but everything was dirty and broken. Very little was going on inside except sex, drugs and rock and roll."

After appearing in American Graffiti, Mackenzie caught her big break when she landed the role of Julie on "One Day at a Time" in 1975. But, by 1978, Mackenzie was in the middle of a drug haze. The producers of the successful show eventually fired her. She went to rehab and returned to the show, but left again after refusing to take a drug test.

It seemed that eventually, Mackenzie cleaned up her act. She and her father went on tour with the New Mamas and the Papas along with original member Denny Doherty. In 1994, she returned to television as, oddly enough, a drug counselor on "90210." She also had a regular gig on Disney's "So Weird."

But now, just like with Tatum O'Neal, it appears that maybe Mackenzie hasn't let go of the drug demon just yet. She was arrested last Wednesday in the Los Angeles International Airport for alleged cocaine and heroin possession.

While sitting in the Van Nuys police station, Mackenzie received a little support from half-sister Bijou, who reportedly visited her several times. I honestly don't know if Mackenzie is still in jail, as TMZ reports, or out on $10,000 bail as many more media outlets are reporting. All I do know is it is sad to see someone who seemed to have to together fall apart again.
