The Difference Between Friendship and Marriage

Sometimes I wonder what the difference is between friendship and marriage.  Not casual friendship, or even good friendship, but really-close, best-friends, rely-on-each-other-for-everything friendship.  If we look to the media for answers, it seems to imply that the only difference is physical desire.  In movies and television, the only or at least primary distinguishable change in the relationship between two characters that are best friends, and then become something more, is that their relationship adds a sexual element. Those are usually my favorite types of stories (as opposed to ones where the characters aren’t friends but jump right to dating), only … Continue reading

We Cannot Live on Love Alone

During my first year of marriage I wasn’t as happy as I should have been. Despite the supposed “honeymoon period,” I often felt listless and depressed. It took me a while to figure out why. Jonathan has an excellent job with the government. Unfortunately it’s located in a rural area, so most of the jobs are related to the military base that his position serves. Few jobs exist outside of the technology industry. Basically, my plan to start freelance work once we had children, so I could stay at home with them, had to be bumped up a few years … Continue reading

Traveling for the Holidays

Are you planning a road trip this Christmas? Visiting family is important during the holidays, but traveling can be a little intimidating if you are a single parent. Just loading the kids up to go to the grocery store can be a challenge. You may be feeling a little discouraged about the long drive, but here are some tips and tricks we’ve learned from our own road trips to make the journey just a little less stressful. Bring plenty of things to keep the kids entertained. Long car rides are boring, especially for children who seem to have the attention … Continue reading

Tangled Ever After

I don’t know how in all of my reading reports from D23 I managed to miss this piece of news. I guess I was just so excited about the newly announced Pixar films and spoilers from “The Avengers” that this slipped through the cracks. Then one day while reading on animation website Cartoon Brew I learned that at the con, Disney also announced plans for another “Tangled” movie. When I first read about “Tangled Ever After,” I was so excited by the prospect of getting to return to this world that what the announcement really meant completely escaped me. But … Continue reading

Magnifying Fall

At the nature center where I work, we have an Elmo. Unlike his Sesame Street namesake, Elmo is not an assuming presence. He’s a small machine, and rather gray. However, when you turn on the switch, Elmo turns kids on to nature. He’s a macroscope. What is a macroscope? Like a hand lens, it magnifies objects that are hard to see with the naked eye. Like a microscope, it’s a machine to assist your eyes in seeing things that are not necessarily noticeable with your eyes. Our Elmo also projects items onto a screen, so worms look as large as … Continue reading

Basketball Connections

Alright — So the big gift our son received this year was a child-sized plastic basketball hoop (with inflatable mini-ball). He likes balls a lot and recently he’d been becoming quite adept at throwing them across the room and handling them with confidence. One of the sports I grew up playing (and truly loved) was basketball. This simple game has a deceptively simple premise (if we ignore many of the complex rules that have grown around it): put the ball in through the hoop. I realized that our son was already playing this game while picking up his toys: put … Continue reading

But Everyone Else is Thin!

Having a daughter about to reach the teen years I can already see it starting. Her friends get together before even the most minor event to discuss what they will wear, how they will do their hair, and so on. Girls want to look their best whether they are going to the movies or going on a run. They love to spend their time trying on all different outfits to find just the right one to wear. This is simply a harmless part of being a teen girl, right? It remains harmless unless the girl has an issue with body … Continue reading

Not a Fan of Pet Movies, Pt. 1

A short while ago I mentioned animal adventure movies, a type I find best exemplified by the likes of “Homeward Bound,” “Milo and Otis,” or “Babe.” Not many movies belong to this subgenre of pet films, but that shouldn’t matter because as a pet lover I ought to revel in all animal films, right? Wrong. Pet adventure movies are just about the only animal films I can take. I find most other pet films soppy or overly sentimental. I don’t mean to insult those who love them, I just can’t watch them. I think it’s because many other pet movies … Continue reading

Karim the Cross-Country Cat

It’s like many movies I watched growing up: The Austrian Times reports that a domesticated cat did what many invading armies have failed to do, travel 2,000 miles across Russia all on its own. Two years ago the owners of Karim, a gray house cat, moved from their home in Uzbekistan to Liska, Russia. They didn’t think Karim would handle such a long-distance move very well, so they made the devastating decision to leave Karim with their neighbors. But Karim’s owners didn’t just dump him off on the first people they could find to take him. To try to ease … Continue reading

Love Each Other As If Every Day Is The Only Day.

‘Love each other as if every day is the only day.’ These words came out of the novel True Blue which I read recently. As you’ve probably gathered by now, I’m huge reader and Luanne Rice is a favorite author since I discovered her last year. As I read or watch TV or movies, I tend to have one eye on things I things I can use for blogs. This was one of those comments. But why love each other as is if every day is the only day? One of the reasons is that we don’t know what tomorrow … Continue reading
