Is CBS Cutting Couric?

Even if that were their plan they certainly wouldn’t spin it that way. Instead, the brass at the eye network would make it appear to viewers that Katie Couric herself made the decision to leave her cushy anchor job for greener pastures. Enter the Wall Street Journal. The paper recently ran an article in which it quotes CBS News executives and a select group of Couric’s inner circle saying what insiders predicted was bound to happen sooner rather than later: The former “Today” show host is expected to leave her post at CBS Evening News shortly after the January 2009 … Continue reading

Katie Headed For Iraq

Just a few weeks shy of celebrating her first anniversary as “CBS Evening News” anchor–Katie Couric is ditching the desk and heading for Iraq. In what network insiders are calling an “ambitious reporting trip,” Couric leaves today for the war torn country. She is scheduled to anchor the “CBS Evening News” from Baghdad next Tuesday and Wednesday, then from Damascus on Thursday and Friday. This will be the first time Couric will be reporting from the region. She is the second major network anchor to travel to Iraq since ABC News’ Bob Woodruff was nearly killed by a roadside bomb … Continue reading

All About Katie

I’ll admit I have written quite a number of blogs about Katie Couric. Most of them were penned in the days following her historic move to the “CBS Evening News.” Next month will mark Couric’s first anniversary at the CBS anchor desk and wouldn’t you know that her big day is being marred by the publication of a new book that allegedly paints the peppy former “Today” show queen in a very unflattering light. Talk about timing. It’s no secret that Couric has faced a ton of criticism in the last few months. Rating for her show have tanked since … Continue reading

Could Katie Couric Be Bolting From CBS?

To answer the question… it’s highly unlikely. Despite record low ratings and an onslaught of personal attacks from colleagues she thought she could trust, it seems that CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric will honor her 5-year contract with the network. Of course, that doesn’t mean that all that has transpired since she left her cushy job at NBC has not taken a toll on her confidence and composure. In a lengthy interview with New York magazine Couric (for the first time) publicly admits she has second-guessed her move from the Today show to the Evening News. Couric tells the … Continue reading

Katie’s Big Week

Looks like the hype paid off. Katie Couric’s historic debut as the first female solo anchor of a nightly newscast hit the mark. At least that’s what the ratings show. As for her performance reviews—well, it seems everyone’s a critic. Four days after one of the most talked-about debuts in television history Couric is sitting on top of the heap. Opening night she blasted the competition. According to Neilsen Media Research, nearly 13.6 million people watched Couric’s debut–that’s nearly double the average audience for the “CBS Evening News” last week, and the program’s biggest audience since February 16, 1998, in … Continue reading

What Will Katie Wear?

It seems like just yesterday that Katie Couric was bidding adieu to fans on what would be her last day as host of NBC’s “Today” show. Now we are just hours away from her debut in the history making role as the first female solo anchor of a nightly news program. It’s being called it “the most talked-about debut of the fall television season” and CBS couldn’t be happier. In preparation for Couric’s debut on the “CBS Evening News,” the network gutted its newsroom on Manhattan’s West Side this summer and built a new one that houses Couric’s set. In … Continue reading

Katie Couric’s “Magic” Weight Loss Program

Leave it to Katie Couric to make light of a “weighty” situation. That’s exactly what she has done with the very uncomfortable situation she was presented with courtesy of some “creative digital airbrushing.” The editorial staff of a promotional magazine (which is only distributed to CBS stations and passengers aboard American Airlines) took the liberty of retouching a photo taken of Couric at a recent advertising presentation. Editors of “Watch!” magazine say they digitally altered Couric’s photo to make her look about 20 pounds thinner, without the knowledge of Couric and CBS News management. But, the incoming CBS Evening News … Continue reading

Katie Couric Makes History Again

Katie Couric hasn’t even appeared on-air as CBS’ new lead anchor and she’s already helping the network make history. CBS has just announced that it will become the first network to simulcast its evening news broadcast online, starting on the night of Couric’s debut as anchor September 5th. This is big news in the world of broadcast journalism as all of the networks have aggressively pushed their newscasts onto the Web over the past couple of years. They have been almost forced to do so since the audience for evening newscasts has plummeted in recent years. The idea to simulcast … Continue reading

Tom Brokaw Meets the Press

Did you hear that? The high pitch screams came from NBC bigwigs after veteran news anchor Tom Brokaw agreed to moderate NBC’s “Meet the Press” through the November election to fill the vacancy created by the death of Tim Russert. Did you hear that? It was the nation breathing a collective sigh of relief. Simply put no one can replace the highly revered and dearly beloved Russert. However, if anyone can help fans deal with Russert’s tragic and untimely death while still holding presidential candidates responsible for their words and actions it’s Tom Brokaw. Brokaw will begin his moderating duties … Continue reading

Tim Russert Dead at 58

The hardest working man in television news has died. NBC political guru and host of “Meet the Press,” Tim Russert died at work this afternoon. According to reports, the famous TV journalist and political heavyweight collapsed while he was recording a voice-over at NBC’s Washington news bureau. He was 58 years old. The New York Times is reporting that an ambulance rushed to the studio and at one point Russert was reportedly briefly revived, but according to witnesses, the broadcasting giant apparently passed away either on the way or at a local Washington D.C. hospital. About an hour ago former … Continue reading
