Love Letters: Tracy & Hepburn

Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, need I say anymore? For those of you who are not fans (and shame on you if you are not) – Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn were Hollywood classics who felt an instant attraction for each other and despite her reputation as the outspoken, trailblazer that she was – what Tracy wanted to do, where he wanted to live, even what films he wanted to make – that was what Hepburn wanted to do too. Friends & Lovers Despite her outspoken nature, Hepburn was an intensely private woman and her infamous relationships with Hugh Hefner … Continue reading

How Would He Have Voted During the Suffrage Movement?

The weekend before last Wayne and I headed to our local polling place to capitalize on the early voting system the city’s got set up. It’s nice. We enjoyed short lines, which spared us from the muss and fuss that’s sure to plague the polls next Tuesday. I got to thinking how remarkable that was. Not so much about the convenience of early voting (which is pretty nice), but about voting period. It’s hard for me to fathom that it hasn’t even been 100 years that women have had the right to vote. Grandma Wasn’t a Suffragette Whenever I think … Continue reading

Appreciating Elephants

Happy Elephant Appreciation Day! This was perhaps the easiest of celebration days for me to find out about. History Mission Media, Inc. declared September 22nd Elephant Appreciation Day in 1996. The company is a digital and print publisher of graphics, but it’s owned by the Hepburn Family. (Maybe a relation of Katherine and Audrey Hepburn?) Wayne Hepburn, Mission Media’s publisher and president, started the day because the elephant: • is the largest living land mammal • has a unique nose –it’s trunk! • is noble • is an endangered species • has helped man in various ways throughout the ages … Continue reading

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? (1967)

Of all the Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn movies ever made, this is the one you most need to see. Katharine Houghton (Hepburn’s real-life niece) stars as Joanna Drayton, a young woman from a fairly well-to-do family who goes to Hawaii for a vacation. When she comes back, she has some news for her parents (Tracey and Hepburn). She met a wonderful man, got swept off her feet in a whirlwind affair, and is engaged. This is shocking news enough – it’s one thing to send your daughter on a trip, and quite another to have her come home with plans to … Continue reading

Pat and Mike (1957)

Starring the unforgettable team of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, “Pat and Mike” is the story of Patricia Pemberton (Hepburn), the physical education teacher at an upper-class school. Her fiancé is Collier Weld (William Ching) an overbearing, patronizing man who never gives Pat the credit she deserves. Pat is an excellent golfer, but when she’s out on the green with Collier, she can’t hit a ball to save her life. When a wealthy patron asks Collier and Patricia to go golfing to firm up the details on a large gift to the school, Pat goes along, flubbing it up all … Continue reading
