Joaquin Phoenix’s Weird Interview on David Letterman

I don’t normally watch The Late Show with David Letterman. In fact, I prefer to watch a movie that I like or a rerun of a show I enjoy like “Top Chef,” even if it is one I’ve seen 100 times. But late last night, I wasn’t sleepy and there wasn’t anything on, so I was scanning the cable guide when I stumbled upon what I knew would be interesting – Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman. I know a train wreck when I am about to see it happen. Given Joaquin’s recent oddness these last few weeks, what with quitting acting … Continue reading

Joaquin Phoenix.. . .Rapper?

Recently, Academy Award nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix kissed acting goodbye, saying he was leaving to pursue a career in music. Or, did he? When I first read that Joaquin was not going to act anymore, I was saddened. I’ve loved his performance in many movies, but knowing a little about his family background, I wasn’t surprised. In case you didn’t know, Joaquin and his siblings (River, Rain, Liberty, and Summer) were brought up in a less than traditional atmosphere. Their parents, John and Arlyn, were members of the religion Children of God. The Phoenix children spent most of their childhood … Continue reading

Joaquin Phoenix Retiring from Acting While Favreau and Downey Kick It into High Gear

Baseball players may retire while still in their thirties, especially if they have injuries. Olympic athletes often retire in their thirties. But, an actor retiring at 34? It appears that would be so in the case of Joaquin Phoenix. Joaquin, who I loved in films such as Buffalo Soldiers, The Village, Gladiator, and Walk the Line (the last two for which he received Academy Award nominations), attended a benefit for Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall camps last Monday and dropped this shocking announcement on the media. He told Extra’s Jerry Penacoli “I want to take this opportunity…to give you … Continue reading

Joaquin Phoenix Retires and “Melrose Place” Rides Again

It may have sounded like an April Fool’s joke, but the bomb actor Joaquin Phoenix dropped at a Paul Newman tribute earlier this week was anything but funny. The 34-year-old actor’s stunning announcement: He’s retiring from acting. “I’m not doing films anymore,” the two-time Oscar nominee told a shocked reporter from TV’s “Extra.” According to Phoenix, he’s leaving the big screen behind to concentrate on his music career. While he refused to elaborate on his plans, the actor did reveal that he is currently working on a record for the British band The Charlatans and has been contemplating a move … Continue reading

Who’s Your Favorite Movie Villain? Part Three

Continuing with the movie villain thread, another one of my personal favorites was Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus from Gladiator. In love with his own sister and having killed his father to obtain his title, he wanted to squelch Russell Crowe’s character Maximus so he could be in complete control of Rome. Joaquin definitely deserved his Oscar nod for this villainous performance (and he looked good while pulling it off!). Not all the villains listed on Entertainment Weekly’s top 50 were human. There were four animated villains – Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Shere Khan from The … Continue reading

Dumbest Celebrity Quotes…Ever!

As you probably can tell, I love celebrities. In my mind, they are superhuman. They wake up looking beautiful (yes, deep down I know they wake up looking shabby just like I do), they are always taller than they really are, and they are always intelligent. Well, that is until they open their mouths. Here are a few of the dumbest quotes ever uttered out of a celeb mouth: Blondes will be blondes, even if they are fake: Britney Spears – “I get to go overseas place, like Canada” Jessica Simpson – “Is this chicken what I have, or is … Continue reading

Gone Before 30

As the world still tries to recover from Heath Ledger’s untimely death, some are remembering others who died young. ABC News did a segment on stars that died before they reached age 30. I have already blogged about many of the people on the list. Some died because of violence such as the Notorious B.I.G and Tupac Shakur. Some took their own lives like Kurt Cobain. Still others succumbed to drug use like Brad Renfro, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and River Phoenix. When I first heard of Heath’s death, I immediately thought of River. Talented yet troubled, both gave us … Continue reading

Walk the Line (2005)

While not a particularly easy film to watch, “Walk the Line” is still breathtaking in its gritty reality. I came away deeply moved by this Oscar-winning movie. Joaquin Phoenix plays a young Johnny Cash, a man with a deep voice and an unusual talent for music. As a boy, he often sang hymns with his brother, Jack, who was studying to be a preacher some day. In a freak accident, Jack is killed, and their father never got over it, often saying that the devil took the wrong son. He never saw the good that was in the young Johnny. … Continue reading

Cash Concert Canned and “Stanford” Dishes on “Sex”

On January 13, 1968, Johnny Cash performed a legendary concert at the Folsom State Prison. Cash himself was no stranger to run-ins with the law. But, despite his image, Cash was never sentenced to prison. He did go to jail seven times, but only spent one night each stay. However, his Folsom Prison concert helped give him the “outlaw” image and was a breakthrough performance that became a well-liked live album. To make the 40th anniversary of that memorable concert, there was tribute concert planned, but those plans have now been scrapped. Who decided to cancel the concert? Well, that … Continue reading

Juicy Hollywood Tidbits – May 9, 2007

Extreme Makeover Host Faces DUI Charges I will admit that every once in a while, when I forget to turn the channel, I am sucked into watching Extreme Makeover – Home Edition. I hate to watch it because frankly, it usually makes me end up crying because I am so happy for the recipient family. Now, host Ty Pennington has his own worries to cry over. He was arrested last Tuesday and charged with misdemeanor drunk driving. His blood alcohol level was .14 – almost double California’s legal limit of .08. He was released on $5,000 bond and called his … Continue reading
