Pretty Baby

What parent out there doesn’t think her baby is the cutest thing gracing the face of the planet? What’s more, even if your infant is not-so pretty, you’re probably not going to hear it from friends or family members. Remember the Seinfeld episode where Jerry and Elaine try to keep the vomit in their mouths after catching sight of their friend Carol’s hideous-looking baby? No one tells a parent her child is ugly. Of course, the enabling has its limits. For example, if you think your baby is all that and decide to enter him or her into the cut-throat … Continue reading

Halloween Howlers

Knock, knock! Who’s there? Goblin! Goblin who? Goblin too much candy can give you a tummy ache. Knock, knock! Who’s there? Zombie! Zombie who? Zombie afraid, it’s just a costume. Knock, knock! Who’s there? Tomb! Tomb who? Tomb many hilarious Halloween jokes to miss out on! “Thank you. I’ll be here all week.” Or so says my 7-year-old, who has finally learned how to tell a knock-knock joke so it works. The milestones keep coming. No more: Her: Knock, knock! Me: Who’s there? Her: Telephone! Me: Telephone who? Her: Telephone… um… telephone in the closet. I’ll get it! Thanks to … Continue reading

It’s been all over the news – next week is Oprah Winfrey’s last show. Well, I doubt it is her last show, but it is the last episode of her highly successful “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which has been on air for 25 years. Twenty-five-years? Do you realize there are grownups that don’t know life without “The Oprah Winfrey Show?” Anyhow, it is a big deal and while the media has been talking about it every since Oprah announced the retirement of the show, this week, the frenzy is palpable. Who will appear on Oprah’s last show? Actually, we don’t … Continue reading

The Power of Guest Stars

Forget about Michael Phelps sinking or swimming during his stint as host of this week’s “Saturday Night Live,” I’m more interested in the rumor that “SNL” alum Tina Fey may be returning to the popular comedy sketch show to play Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. I have been a fan of Fey’s since she made her debut on “SNL” (she left to head up NBC’s “30 Rock”) and would be thrilled to see her back on late-night TV. “SNL” head honcho Lorne Michaels wouldn’t confirm Fey’s temporary return; rather all he would tell reporters is that whoever plays John … Continue reading

52 Romantic Movies You Either Love or Hate

Dale’s blogs about some of her favorite romantic movies (see “Favorite Romance Movies” and “Favorite Romance Movies-Part 2”) has inspired this next one from me. The idea took hold because I sympathized with a comment one reader, deedee1231, left on both blogs regarding the movie Casablanca. She wasn’t a fan. (Though she didn’t begrudge Dale for including it on her fave list.) Deedee1231 thought Casablanca was overhyped. (Though she also admitted she’d seen it so many times she was just plum over it.) I chuckled with sympathy when I read her comment. Though it wasn’t Casablanca I had in mind, … Continue reading

Bee Movie (2007)

“Bee Movie” is a recent cartoon released by Dreamworks and written by Jerry Seinfeld. I watched it with my children last night and we enjoyed it. Barry is a young bee who has just graduated from college. The lifespan of a bee being somewhat short, his entire college career lasted three days, but his graduation is still a big deal. He can now choose which job he wants out of all those offered in the hive. He can stir honey. He can sweep the floors. He can clean the bathrooms. Whatever job he takes, he will do it the rest … Continue reading

Jerry Seinfeld to the Rescue

You don’t have to be a sports fan to appreciate this next tale… even though it involves a famous NFL quarterback. Jerry Seinfeld is livid with a guy I used to work with. Jay Zollar is the station manager at the FOX affiliate in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The same place Eli Manning and the rest of the New York Giants are visiting this weekend as they prepare to take on the Green Bay Packers in the NFC championship game Sunday evening. A few days ago Zollar learned that Manning’s favorite show is “Seinfeld.” So as a dig to the football … Continue reading

Amazon’s Bestselling Books – November 2007

Wondering what everyone in America is reading right now? I was a little curious myself and decided to take a look at Amazon’s bestseller list. I was pretty surprised to see how many nonfiction titles were listed amongst the top ten, but I do understand that twice as many nonfiction as fiction books are published per year, so maybe I shouldn’t have been so surprised. Coming in at #1: “You: Staying Young: The Owner’s Manual for Extending Your Warranty” by by Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz. This book was written to help us understand how our bodies age … Continue reading

Two Unfortunate Entertainment Deaths

Comedian Richard Jeni Dead at 49 Police are still investigating the matter, but it appears as if comedian Richard Jeni took his own life this past weekend. His girlfriend called police Saturday morning saying “My boyfriend shot himself in the face.” He was barely alive when the paramedics arrived at the West Hollywood home and dead later at a nearby hospital. An autopsy is being performed today. Jeni appeared regularly on the “Tonight Show” and had been in episodes of “Everybody Hates Chris” and “Married with Children.” The comedian had also appeared on “Hollywood Squares” and “Match Game.” He was … Continue reading
