Keeping Your Kids Fit and Safe This Summer

Now that school’s out millions of kids across the nation are spending their summer days having fun on the soccer field, basketball court and in the swimming pool. While these activities are great ways to burn calories and stay in shape, they often lead to sports-related injuries such as bruises, scrapes and broken bones. In fact, a new report shows that sports-related injuries accounted for 22 percent of hospital emergency department visits for children ages 5 to 17 in 2007. If you have an active young son, then you might not be surprised by the new findings. After all, according … Continue reading

Another Book for Middle-Grade Boys!

Mike Lupica is fast becoming as well-known for his middle-grade novels—in particular, the Comeback Kids series– as for his sports writing and broadcasting. Safe at Home is a book about baseball, friends, parents’ expectations, and fitting in. The main character, Nick, was adopted from foster care when he was nine. This underlies and explains many of his reactions to things. Lupica manages to convey to the reader how Nick’s experiences have influenced his perception of things without making the story all about adoption. As I said, it’s a baseball story. Descriptions of the plays and of the relationships among teammates … Continue reading

The Newly Coupled and Uncoupled

Nine months after the death of Heath Ledger and several months after rumors of a possible relationship, actress Michelle Williams and director Spike Jonze have gone public with their romance. The two were seen at a screening of Synecdoche (in which Williams stars) in Manhattan on Wednesday night. The two came into the auditorium together and Jonze had his arm around Williams’ waist. Sources say they held hands as they walked through the lobby. After stopping to talk to co-star Catherine Keener, Jonze again put his arm around Williams’ waist. At the after party on the rooftop of the Gramercy … Continue reading

Saving on Travel Down Under

Have you been watching Matt Lauer’s daily travel adventures on the “Today” show? Tomorrow is Day 4 of “Where in the World is Matt Lauer” and I’m not even going to bother guessing where the morning show co-host is going to be reporting live from. No, I have my eyes set on Matt’s final day abroad. Unless there was an announcement that I missed about him not visiting this country I have no doubt that Lauer will wrap up his world travels in China. After all, NBC is televising the Summer Olympic Games and what better way to plug the … Continue reading

Celebrities Giving Birth—-Yes, No, Maybe So

YES I watch her show with my daughter on a regular basis and now Food Network’s Giada De Laurentiis has a baby girl of her own. The celebrity chef gave birth to her first child on Saturday in Los Angeles, according to her rep. De Laurentiis and her fashion designer husband Todd Thompson named their baby daughter Jade Marie De Laurentiis Thompson. The newest member of the Thompson clan weighed in at 5lbs, 13oz, according to the “Today” show contributor’s rep. Frankly, I’m surprised baby Jade weighed as much as she did. If you saw video or still photos of … Continue reading

Celebrity Babies and Birthdays

I was fortunate enough to meet her the day after she won a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, though I didn’t get invited to her wedding. Still, I am thrilled to spread the good news that gymnast Dominique Moceanu and her husband Dr. Michael Canales will be welcoming their first child in January. Currently, 25-year-old Moceanu is living in Cleveland with her foot and ankle surgeon husband and teaching gymnastics to girls who weren’t even born when she and the rest of her “Magnificent 7” teammates struck gold in Atlanta. Gymnastics may have been a … Continue reading

NBC to Matt Lauer: “Shame On You!”

I like Matt Lauer. Okay, I’ve never met the guy, but I do enjoy watching him co-anchor NBC’s “Today” show. I especially enjoyed watching him sheepishly admit to a mistake he made during a recent story. For you non-“Today” viewers, this week the morning show is running a series called “Today on the Trail,” in which show anchors follow presidential contenders on the campaign trail. Yesterday, the show aired a piece that featured Lauer sitting in the back seat of a SUV interviewing Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Both men were taped with their seat belts unbuckled as the vehicle … Continue reading

Sports Are Just A Game

There is no doubt that sports can have a positive impact upon kids. Belonging to a team gives kids an instant identity and group to belong with. They also learn skills like setting goals, dealing with adversity, and sportsmanship. Playing sports can also have a positive impact upon a child’s self-esteem. David Burnett, author of “It’s Just A Game!” says sports gives children some control. When playing sports kids “learn the rules of the game — and the more they learn, the more they are in control — and they’re going to learn about sportsmanship and [how] to control their … Continue reading

The Year In Review: Television

Oh what a year it’s been… in television that is. Some of your favorite shows may still be on (“Desperate Housewives”) while others may have bit the dust (“Will and Grace”), but look back at 2006 and you’ll see definite trends existed in the world of make believe. More Dramas Taking a cue from hits like “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives,” the networks debuted one drama after another – too many, in fact, according to media analysts, for busy viewers to keep up with. The winners: NBC’s “Heroes” and “Medium.” The losers: Fox’s “Vanished” and the CW’s “Runaway.” Nightly News ABC—-Tragedy … Continue reading

It’s A Boy. It’s A Girl. It’s A Baseball Team.

IT’S A BOY “Today” show co-host Matt Lauer and wife Annette welcomed their third child, a son to the family just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday… and less than 24 hours later Lauer was back at work—-chatting it up on the set of the popular NBC morning show (wow, and I complained when my husband went back to work three days after the birth of our daughter). But, that’s not the only thing about the birth that’s making headlines. Lauer’s new bundle of joy has a very unique name: Thijs (Pronounced “Tice”). On air today Lauer explained the baby’s name is … Continue reading
