Mercy for Madonna

Madonna will be allowed to adopt four-year-old Chifundo (in English the name means “Mercy”) James after all, Malawian judges have decided. The three judges of Malawi’s highest court, in a June 12 session, overruled a lower court’s denial of Madonna’s adoption petition. Malawian law says that an adopting parent must have been a resident of Malawi for eighteen months. This requirement was waived when Madonna adopted her son David. She was allowed to take David home in 2006, and a Malawian court gave her and her then-husband Guy Ritchie permanent custody in May 2008 following an evaluation by social welfare … Continue reading

Natalie Portman is Not a Cheater and Madonna is Not Marrying Jesus

Don’t believe the rumors: Natalie Portman is not the mystery woman behind Sean Penn’s divorce. At least that’s what the breathtakingly gorgeous actress maintains. In an effort to set the record straight, Portman recently broke her rule about speaking to the press about her personal life, so she could clear up reports that claim she broke up Penn’s marriage to actress Robin Wright-Penn. Portman told TV’s “Extra” that the romance story is “completely untrue” and she’s appalled that the media has linked her to Penn, who split from his wife for the second time a few weeks ago. In the … Continue reading

Court is Adjourned–for Now–in Madonna’s Adoption Appeal

Madonna’s efforts to adopt Malawian child Chifundo (Mercy) James are at a pause. The court heard arguments in her appeal this past Monday but did not immediately set a date for the second hearing, at which a decision is expected to be made. The situation keeps generating more information, some of it conflicting. (I wonder whether some of the information is being supplied to the media by Madonna’s PR people or by the various human rights groups who have filed court documents in the case.) There are reports of threats from the child’s maternal grandparents to the birthfather, the preschooler … Continue reading

“You’re My What?”—Heartbreaking Parent/Child Reunion

While the media was busy covering Madonna’s latest unsuccessful attempt to adopt another child from Malawi, not much was made of another newsworthy (to me anyway) story that took place during the singer’s recent trip to the African nation. According to reports, the Material Mom made sure her three children–12-year-old Lourdes, 8-year-old Rocco, and 3-year-old David–accompanied her during her pilgrimage to Malawi last week. The entire family spent six days touring various poor African villages to promote Madonna’s Raising Malawi charity. (The charity helps feed, educate and provide medical care for some of Malawi’s more than 1 million orphans, half … Continue reading

Adoption in the News this Week: from ER to Madonna to the Hague

Adoption has certainly been in the media this week. As my fellow blogger Michelle has noted in the popular culture blog, Madonna’s petition to adopt a second child from Malawi was denied by a judge in Malawian court. Madonna, who has said she plans to appeal, left the country Sunday without three-year-old Chifundo “Mercy” James, the child she had planned to make her daughter. The judge said she fears that waiving the country’s residency requirements for adoptive parents would open the door to traffickers. Other possible reasons for the different outcome in this case from Madonna’s previous adoption are being … Continue reading

Madonna’s Adoption DENIED!

I guess money and fame can’t get you everything in life. It’s a lesson that apparently came as a HUGE shock to Madonna today after a judge declined her adoption request. According to reports, a residency requirement in Malawi has prevented the Material Girl from flying back to New York with the 3-year-old girl, who she wanted to adopt as her own. Reports say the residency requirement for prospective parents is 18 to 24 months in Malawi. Madonna has homes in New York and London, but does not have a residence in Malawi despite the fact that she adopted her … Continue reading

Madonna Adopting Toddler Girl

It’s a girl for Madonna! According to reports, the Material Mom will add another daughter to her brood of kids, which already includes 12-year-old Lourdes, 8-year-old Rocco, and 3-year-old David Banda. All three children have different fathers, and the newest addition won’t be an exception. Reports say Madonna will return to Malawi next week to adopt a new daughter. The news comes just a year after the singer’s official adoption of David Banda, which took more than two year thanks to legal wrangling. Local officials in Malawi say the pop diva is scheduled to arrive in Lilongwe next Monday to … Continue reading

Celebrity Wrap: Madonna and Jennifer Aniston

I’m not sure I buy this whole Madonna loves her 22-year-old boyfriend Jesus Luz bit. If you haven’t already heard, the 50-year-old Material Girl is reportedly crazy in love (or lust… or just plain crazy) for her 22-year-old boy toy Jesus Luz. Never mind that the singer is older than Luz’s biological mother and Luz is less than a decade older than Madonna’s daughter Lourdes, the pop diva reportedly “deeply cares” for him and now she’s taking their relationship to a new level. According to reports, the songstress recently introduced Luz to her children during a family trip to a … Continue reading

Guy’s New Girl and Madonna’s New Baby

Tired of having his face rubbed in the fact that his ex-wife left him for a hunky pro baseball player, Guy Ritchie is striking back with a new love interest of his own. According to reports, Madonna’s ex is courting millionaire heiress Jemima Khan. The two reportedly attended a London dinner party together earlier this month where they spent some “quality time” together. London’s Telegraph reports that 33-year-old Khan, the socialite daughter of Lady Annabel Goldsmith and the late financier Sir James Goldsmith, has captured Ritchie’s heart. Khan divorced her Pakistani cricket player husband Imran Khan back in 2004. The … Continue reading
