Greenies Goodwill

They may no longer be dating each other, but Jude Law and Sienna Miller still seem to share something in common—helping those less fortunate. Law has recently been getting a lot of press for his work traveling and filming in treacherous areas of eastern Afghanistan to promote the United Nations’ annual day of worldwide cease-fire and nonviolence in September. The 34-year-old actor interviewed children, government ministers and community leaders for a movie to mark the U.N.’s Peace Day on September 21st. According to Law, the film is “about documenting and seeing how Peace Day can save lives.” Crew members say … Continue reading

Mia Farrow—Goodwill Ambassador

They may not be as familiar with her acting skills as their American counterparts, but that didn’t stop children in the Central African Republic from coming out in droves this weekend to shake hands with award-winning actress Mia Farrow. Farrow is in the region for a weeklong tour and to raise awareness about a crisis most recently aided by Hollywood heat throb George Clooney—the unsettling situation in the Darfur region. The 62-year-old actress and U.N. goodwill ambassador is set to visit the more than 150,000 people displaced by the fighting. “It’s called a forgotten crisis, a forgotten humanitarian crisis, but … Continue reading

International Goodwill

We devote a lot of space to celebrity do-gooders in this blog category. However, looking back at previous blogs I have noticed the majority of them focus on the charitable works of Americans. Well, here’s a blog and about a non-American celebrity who is reaching out to children from her home country. Five time Latin Grammy nominee Shakira just announced she will donate the proceeds from a concert in her hometown to build an arts school for 1,800 children forced to flee their homes by Colombia’s civil war. According to press reports, the concert will take place November 15th in … Continue reading

Green Athletes

I have blogged about green celebrities, green musicians, and green models, but there are also plenty of green athletes in the world. First, since the London Olympics are still fresh on everyone’s mind, let’s take a look at a few green Olympians. No doubt you heard the name Usain Bolt a few million times during the London Olympics. Okay, maybe not quite that much, but the self-proclaimed Fastest Man of Earth’s name was certainly mentioned a lot. Bolt took home gold in the 100 m, 200 m, and 2×100 m relay. But, he also serves at the ambassador of culture/sport … Continue reading

Celebs Under Fire for Attending Kadyrov Party

Once again, I am mixing my love for green and pop culture together. This time, it is for celebrities that celebrated a reported bad guy. Last week, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov celebrated his 35th birthday in style. Showing up to help him celebrate (not unpaid I might add) was Academy Award winning actress Hilary Swank and action star Jean-Claude Van Damme. Rumors are that British violinist Vanessa-Mae received as much as $500,000 dollars to play at the party. Kevin Costner, Eva Mendes, and Shakira were also all invited, but didn’t show up. There is nothing wrong with throwing a big … Continue reading

What is World Peace Day?

September 21 is World Peace Day, also known as International Day of World Peace. The United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly declared September 21 International Day of Peace and the first occurrence was celebrated in 1982. So what exactly is World Peace Day? Well, it is all about peace. In some cases, it may be used for a temporary cease fire in the case of war. Each September 21, the day starts out with the “Peace Bell” being rang at the UN Headquarters in New York City. For those that don’t know, the “Peace Bell” is made of coins donated from … Continue reading

More Wisdom From Proverbs

Yesterday we looked at Proverbs 30:5-6. Today we’ll look at Proverbs 30:7-9, where the writer asks two things of God. The first is: ‘Keep falsehood and lies far from me.’ This could be read as keep me from telling lies to others. We often want to grade lies. It’s easy to slip into what we term ‘white lies,’ so as not to hurt another person’s feelings, or because we want to please them or make ourselves look good but God makes no distinction. Lies are lies. Proverbs 19:5 says ,’he who pours out lies will not go free.’ The idea … Continue reading

Fallout From the Hogan Crash

In this corner… the family of international wrestling star Hulk Hogan. And in this corner… the family of John Graziano, the 23-year-old former Marine who was critically injured in car crash involving Hogan’s son Nick. Ding. Ding. The smackdown between the two families is getting nasty according to a Florida newspaper, which has been following the painful recovery of the injured Graziano. The young serviceman has been hospitalized since last August when he was a passenger in a car being driven by the pro wrestler’s son Nick Bollea. Since the accident the Bollea family including mom Linda, sister Brooke and … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potpourri: Angelina Jolie’s Newest Fans and Billy Joel’s Anti-War Song

Angelina Jolie may not know that some of her most fervent fans live in the Philippines. And they aren’t women who idolize the international film star or men who dream of wooing her away from Brad Pitt, these fans live in rice paddies… and they are asking the 32-year-old actress to lend them a helping hand. A left-wing Filipino farmers group trying to call attention to thousands of rural people who have been displaced by increased military operations wants Jolie to adopt their cause. The Farmers’ Movement of the Philippines, or KMP, wants the United Nations to send Jolie – … Continue reading

A Sampling of Overseas Child Welfare Efforts by U.S. Adoption Agencies

A common phrase one hears from good adoption organizations is, “We’re not in the business of finding children for parents; we’re in the service of finding parents for children.” One measure of this “children first” philosophy can be an agency’s commitment to helping those children who will not be adopted. It is common for agencies including Holt, Children’s Home Society and Family Services, Catholic Community Services, WACAP and others to partner with organizations in sending countries to support children’s homes, orphanages, and medical facilities in sending countries. Some of these partner agencies sponsor job training and counseling for unwed mothers … Continue reading
